MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday by a 3-1 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first set the Penmen came out on a 4-1 run behind a pair of kills from Julia Cavalcanti. Saint Anselm found their first offensive strike on a kill from Taylor Lacerda (Franklin, Mass.) but the run from the home team would continue. Southern New Hampshire extended their lead to six points on handful of Hawks errors. The Hawks would find their footing as Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia) tallied a pair of service aces. In the latter half of the set another pair of service aces, this time from Madeline Burke (Lake George, N.Y.) evening the score at 15s. Southern New Hampshire would go on a 5-0 run in response forcing the Hawks to take a time out to regroup. Out of the time out Pila tabbed a kill, but the Hawks were unable to build a response and fell to the Penmen 25-20.
- The second set would open the same as the first, with the Penmen opening on an 8-3 lead. Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) would temporally pause their run with a kill of her own, but the Penmen would jump to an even bigger lead of 13-7. Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) sparked a response for the Hawks breaking the Penmen stride with a kill and helping bring the Hawks within four. The set would stay at the distance for the remainder of the exchange, with Kocak tabbing the last point as the Saint Anselm squad fell 25-20.
- The third set of the evening began on an exchange of offensive success for the two teams, as Lacerda and Frano notching kills for the Hawks. Saint Anselm continued into a 9-8 lead before Southern New Hampshire would battle through taking a 16-15 lead. Saint Anselm refused to lay down as Frano took control tallying five kills in the winning stretch of points, allowing for the Hawks to beat the Penmen 25-18 in the set.
- Saint Anselm continued to push back against the home team opening the final set of the evening knotted at 4 points apiece. Southern New Hampshire found their ground again, taking a 11-5 lead off of kills from Angela Mateos. Kocak paused their run tallying another kill to attempt to shift momentum for the Hawks. Slowly the visiting team would push the game within two points as Pila joined the kills column. A service ace from Laura Haas would dampen the Hawks run and allow for the Penmen to move into a 25-20 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Frano led the offensive strike for the Hawks tallying 24 kills, 13 digs, and two service aces. Kocak and Lacerda followed behind with six kills a-piece.
- Abigail Macalagium (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the passing effort with 37 assists to go with four kills and a service ace.
- Defensively Burke tallied 17 digs, four assists and two service aces on the evening.
- As a team the Hawks totaled 47 kills, 78 digs, eight service aces and 11 blocks.
