HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • To begin the afternoon the home team would earn possession first, registering the first shot of the afternoon as Charlotte Sabert ripped at shot at senior keeper Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) who tabbed her first save. In the fourth minute of action fifth year senior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) continued her scoring streak scoring off of a feed from teammate Stephanie Sutton-Brown (Ashby, Mass.) putting the Hawks up 1-0. Two minutes later the Mavericks found their own response taking advantage off of a Saint Anselm foul and scoring off a shot from Jessica Evans. The Hawks would find their next scoring opportunity in the 11th minute of action as Davis and Maggie Burchill (Braintree, Mass.) notched shots on target, but Alexandra Giordano stayed strong in net for the home team. In the second quarter of play Davis would continue to maintain pressure on the Mercy defensive line firing a shot within the first two minutes. At 17:12 Burchill finally would break through and tab an unassisted shoot and score giving the Hawks their advantage 2-1. The remainder of the quarter would be dominated by the Hawks as they would tally seven more shots on goal in the remaining eight minutes of the half.
  • The second half would begin on a high note for Saint Anselm as a foul on the Mavericks would give the Hawks an advantage. The advantage would allow Millie Forster (Chesire, England) to find Ava Rayfield (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) for the two-goal lead within the opening two minutes. The rest of the third quarter would stay in the Hawks power as Mercy would be unable to register any shots, and Saint Anselm would tally nine more. In the final 15 minutes of action Mercy found a scoring opportunity early but Sabert would miss just wide of the net. In the 49th minute the Hawks would have back-to-back scoring opportunities with shots on goal from Laurentien van der Akker (Geldrop, The Netherlands) and Burchill. In the final minute of play a foul in the crease would allow for Saint Anselm's final scoring opportunity. Burchill would step up and successfully find the back of the cage for a penalty shot and goal with 14-seconds remaining in the match.
