HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sacred Heart wasted no time firing the first shots on goal of the game and forced three quick saves out of Saint Anselm sophomore goaltender Clara Karunakar (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada). The Pioneers outshot the Hawks, 7-2, in the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Saint Anselm responded with back-to-back shots midway through the period, but Sacred Heart goaltender Carly Greene was able to stop both.
  • The Pioneers broke through and took a 1-0 lead at the 10:58 mark of the first period with Sami Bowlby getting on the scoresheet. Her even-strength goal was assisted by Olivia Laroche and Kate Helgeson.
  • Over the next seven minutes of play, the Hawks pumped 10 shots on frame and limited the Pioneers to just three. Junior Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.) registered three shots on target during that span, while fifth-year Celesta Paolucci (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and senior Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) each registered two.
  • Despite the offensive onslaught by Saint Anselm, it was Sacred Heart who scored the game's second goal to take a 2-0 advantage with about three minutes left in the first. Brianna Morden finished off a feed from Ally Cohen to help the Pioneers take a two-goal lead at intermission. Greene had 16 saves in goal after just one period of play for the home team.
  • Saint Anselm got off to a strong start in the second period with seven of the first eight shot attempts and a lot of time with the puck. However, Sacred Heart was able to win a faceoff in the offensive zone and capitalized as Helgeson made it 3-0 at the 4:11 mark with Kailey Smith and Paige McNeil picking up the assists.
  • Midway through the second, the Hawks were given a power play for a hooking penalty called on the Pioneers, but they were unable to take advantage despite shots on goal from Jackson and Schneiderhan.
  • Sacred Heart earned a power play of their own immediately after Saint Anselm's expired and made the Hawks pay the price. Ella Holm found the back of the net just 28 seconds into the man-advantage to make it 4-0 in favor of the Pioneers at the 10:52 mark of the second.
  • The Hawks got another power play opportunity late in the middle frame, but could not slot one past Greene as the second period came to a close.
  • Despite the four-goal deficit, the visitors came out of the intermission looking like the better team. The Hawks fired eight shots on goal in the opening five minutes and put 17 shots on goal in the final period, but were ultimately shutout despite two more power plays.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm outshot Sacred Heart in every period and led in shots on goal for the game, 45-38.
  • Sacred Heart held a slight advantage in the faceoff battle, 41-39.
  • The Pioneers also produced 23 blocked shots, while the Hawks put together just eight.
  • Eight different Sacred Heart skaters registered at least one point with Helgeson being the only player to record a multi-point game on a goal and an assist.
  • Greene stopped all 45 shots she faced in the shutout win for the Pioneers. Karunakar made 18 saves in the loss over 30:50 of game time. She was relieved in goal by senior Carina Mancini (Middlefield, Conn.), who made 16 saves and did not allow a goal in 29:08.
  • Jackson and Schneiderhan led the Hawks with seven shots apiece.
