HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Anselm jumped out to a 6-4 advantage in the opening set behind three kills from sophomore Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia).
- Southern New Hampshire provided a response with a pair of kills from Julia Cavalcanti, which would lead to an exchange of points between the teams.
- Pila and sophomore Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) continued to keep the offensive attack alive in the middle of the first set with several kills and a service ace.
- The Penmen began to pull away in the later half of the set and took a 21-18 lead after a pair of kills form Cavalcanti and Deanne Wilson.
- Freshman Taylor Lacerda (Franklin, Mass.) recorded a couple of late kills for Saint Anselm, but the Southern New Hampshire squad eventually pulled away with a 25-22 first set win.
- The Penmen got off to a 9-4 start to open the second set helped by two more Cavalcanti kills, but the Hawks showed some grit and were able to battle back. Sophomore Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) capped off a comeback for Saint Anselm and tied the score at 12 apiece with a subtle tip over the Southern New Hampshire blocking tandem.
- From that point on, the two teams began trading point for point. A service error by Wilson gave Saint Anselm set point at 24-23, but Southern New Hampshire tied it at 24-24 thanks to a kill by Daya Jean-Baptiste.
- The Penmen then took the upper hand and registered five set points in a row, but the Hawks kept battling back to tie the score thanks to kills by Frano, Kocak, Lacerda, and sophomore Miia Dembski (Buffalo, N.Y.). However, Jean-Baptiste finally finished off the set for Southern New Hampshire with a kill of her own to make it 30-28.
- The third set started just as close as the second set ended. After the Penmen made it 3-0, the Hawks quickly tied it at 3-3 and then at 6-6.
- Southern New Hampshire turned up the pressure and took a 13-9 advantage behind five kills and two service aces, forcing Saint Anselm to take a timeout.
- The Hawks attempted to stop the bleeding, but the Penmen continued stacking up points and eventually led, 20-13, after a handful of errors from the home team.
- Frano helped ignite a 4-1 run for Saint Anselm late in the set, but Southern New Hampshire's lead proved to be insurmountable as they cruised to a 25-18 third set victory.
