Men's Ice Hockey Glides Past Anna Maria College, 4-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team glided past Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon defeating the AMCATS by a final score of 4-1 from the JFK Memorial Coliseum. The Hawks picked up their fourth win of the season while the AMCATS fell to a 9-6-0 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks got on the attack early in the opening minutes of the first period ripping nine shots, seven of which were saved by Anna Maria goalie Cole Johnson. At the 7:18 mark, the AMCATS earned the first power play chance of the afternoon firing five shots in the two minutes featuring three saves from freshman goalie Cam Carroll (Putnam, N.Y.) along with a block from sophomore Alex Hoitt (East Bridgewater, Mass.).
  • The Hawks strung together four shots in a one-minute span, respectively, but Johnson denied three shots while Christopher Friberg produced a block to the game scoreless with less than seven minutes left in the period. Carroll came up big for the Hawks after stopping four of the final five AMCATS shots of the period to head into the break tied at 0-0.
  • Anna Maria started the opening two minutes of the second period with the extra skater forcing four early saves from Carroll. The AMCATS broke through the scoring drought after Spencer Carpenter found the back of the net at the 6:07 mark to put Anna Maria ahead 1-0. Less than a minute later, Hunter Brackett ( ) answered for the Hawks notching a goal off the assist from Jac Cordeiro ( ) to even the game at 1-1.
  • Both teams continued to exchange shots midway through the period until senior Will Christensen (Ridgefield, Conn.) capitalized on a power play chance at the 13:57 mark to give Saint Anselm the 2-1 advantage. Shortly after, Patrick DeMarinis (Manasquan, N.J.) joined in on the scoring notching his second goal of the year to extend the Hawks lead to 3-1. Senior Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif) registered three of the last four shot attempts of the period for Saint Anselm, but the Hawks would take the 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
  • Saint Anselm killed another power play to kick off the third period highlighted by two saves from Carroll and a block by senior Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.). Approaching the halfway point of the period, the AMCATS posted five consecutive shots in a 30-second span, respectively, all of which Carroll saved. The Hawks outshot the AMCATS by an 8-1 shot differential featuring a pair of shots from Schwartz.
  • In the final minute of the game, Anna Maria pulled their goalie for the extra skater and managed to get five shot attempts off that all ended up wide of the net. Junior Will van der Veen (Duxbury, Mass) sealed the game for Saint Anselm after scoring an empty net short-handed goal to end the contest with a final score of 4-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • The Hawks held a slight 40-37 edge in total shot attempts while the AMCATS recorded eight blocks in comparison to Saint Anselm's six in the game.
  • Anna Maria was successful in the faceoff battle winning 35-of-64 faceoffs while the Hawks won 29 total faceoffs.
  • Saint Anselm killed all six of Anna Maria's power plays limiting the AMCATS to just 11 total shots. The Hawks went 1-for-3 with the extra skater, their eighth power-play goal of the season.  
  • Christensen and Brackett each tallied their fourth goal of the season while van der Veen notched his third and DeMarinis his second.
  • Carroll posted 36 saves between the pipes to secure his fourth victory of the season after allowing just one goal.
