Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Assumption in Series Finale, 4-1

GARDNER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team dropped the second half of its weekend series aginast the Greyhounds of Assumption University on Saturday, 4-1. The win improves the league-leading Greyhounds to 16-4-0 overall and 11-2-0 in NE10 play. The Hawks slip to 6-11-2 overall, 4-6-2 in the NE10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Assumption got on the board first, scoring at the 8:18 mark of the game's opening period. Nathan Palumbo lit the lamp with helpers from Patrick McKiernan and Jimmy McDermott. 
  • The Greyhounds took advantage of a Hawks penalty three minutes later and took a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:16. 
  • Saint Anselm would close out the final six minutes of the opening frame outshooting Assumption 9-1, but could not find the back of the net before the period ended, still 2-0 Assumption. 
  • In the second period, the Greyhounds again found the net twice, both even-strength goals, to extend the lead to 4-0 in favor of the home team after two periods of action.
  • In the third, the Hawks were again unable to break through until Tommy Schwartz (Ridgefield, Conn.) was finally able to put Saint Anselm on the board with 1:47 remaining in the game, for the Hawks lone tally of the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm outshot Assumption 34-31. 
  • The Hawks won 39 of 77 faceoffs on the afternoon.
  • Saint Anselm went 0-6 on the power play, while the penalty kill surrendered just the one power-play goal in four Assumption oppertunities. 
  • Tucker Hanson (Boxford, Mass.) suffered the loss, notching 27 saves on the afternoon, allowing four goals. Hanson falls to 1-3 on the season. 
  • Schawartz goal was his seventh of the season and second in as many games. 
  • Saint Anselm leads the all-time series against the Greyhounds 19-13-2. On the season, Assumption took three of four match-ups.   programs.
