Men's Ice Hockey Comes Up Short Against Franklin Pierce

GARDNER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team came up short against Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, during the final installment of the two-game Northeast-10 Conference series on Saturday evening. The Hawks dropped to 3-5-2 in conference play while the Ravens improved to a 5-5-0 league record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Will van der Veen (Duxbury, Mass.) fired the first shot on target for the Hawks forcing an early save from Franklin Pierce goalie Jeremy Connor. Freshman goalie Cam Carroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) made his first save of the day after denying a shot attempt by Todd Branish at the 7:22 mark. The Hawks earned their first power play chance after Nicholas Tessier was whistled for high sticking. Saint Anselm registered six total shots with the extra skater however Franklin Pierce would kill the power play thanks to two stops from Connor and three blocks by the Ravens defense.
  • Senior Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) had a goal-scoring chance shortly after the team was back to even strength, but his shot ended up hitting the pipe. Saint Anselm had the man advantage two more times in the period, but the score would remain level at 0-0 by the end of the first period.
  • Junior Max Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) and Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) each fired a shot apiece on frame that Connor was able to save to start the second period. Carroll posted three saves before the Hawks connected six consecutive shots approaching the midway point of the period. Shortly after, the Ravens earned their first power play opportunity of the evening but Saint Anselm's defense limited Franklin Pierce to just two shots to successfully kill the Raven's power play.
  • After neither team found the back of the net after two full periods, the floodgates quickly opened in the third period. Tyson Springer scored at the 6:15 mark to end the scoring drought and give Franklin Pierce to 1-0 edge. Less than a minute later, freshman Patrick DeMarinis (Manasquan, N.J.) tallied his third goal of the season to tie the game back up 1-1.
  • Franklin Pierce regained their advantage at the 7:15 mark thanks to score by Jackson Dobek to make it a 2-1 game with 13 minutes left on the clock, respectively. Saint Anselm outshot the Ravens 12-2 following Dobek's go-ahead goal but couldn't capitalize on their chances. The Ravens solidified their victory after Devin Rohrich scored a late goal on a power play opportunity to ultimately cement the 3-1 final score at the end of regulation.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm outshot Franklin Pierce 30-19 in the game but the Ravens held a 17-2 advantage in total blocks.
  • The Hawks won 31-of-57 faceoff attempts Reynolds leading the squad with nine faceoff wins.
  • Saint Anselm went 0-for-5 with the extra skater, ripping a combined eight-shot attempts, while Franklin Pierce was 1-for-4 on the day after firing just three combined shots.
  • DeMarinis scored the lone Hawk goal of the game, his third of the season, after posting three shots and earning a plus-one on-ice rating. Mix and Rosen each picked up an assist apiece on DeMarinis's goal.
  • Carroll registered 16 saves in net for Saint Anselm and allowed three goals. 
  • Saint Anselm now holds a 29-6 record in the all-time series against Franklin Pierce following today's 35th meeting between the two programs.
