Lewandowski Scores Twice to Lead Field Hockey to 4-1 Win Over STAC

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) scored two goals on Saturday to lead the No. 4 nationally ranked Saint Anselm field hockey team to a 4-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The win moves the Hawks to an 8-2 overall and are now 4-1 in NE10 play while the Spartans fall to 0-10 and winless in five conference contests.

UP NEXT
  • The Hawks will head across town to face Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, Oct. 4 for a 6pm Queen City Cup showdown. This marks the second meeting between the two programs in the last week. Saint Anselm hosted SNHU in a rescheduled contest Thursday, Sept. 27, and came away with the 4-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Anselm held a 9-1 advantage on penalty corners in the opening frame but could not capitalize, as the first period came to a close 0-0.
  • In the second, freshman Laurentien van den Akker (Geldrop, The Netherlands) got the scoring started for the Hawks connecting off a pass from senior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) on a penalty corner opportunity to give Saint Anselm the 1-0 edge. Lewandowski notched her third goal of the season, all coming within the past week, at the 22:24 mark of the game on a penalty stroke, putting the Hawks up 2-0 through two periods.
  • In the third period, Lewandowski sent home a junior Ava Rayfield (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) pass for her second score of the day, extending the Hawks advantage to 3-0. Junior goalkeeper Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) came on to face a Nicola Van Buuren penalty stroke in the closing minutes of the third and stymied the best Spartans chance of the frame, getting the save.
  • Forster tacked on her second of the game just three minutes later, connecting off a Stephanie Sutton-Brown (Ashby, Mass.) pass and giving the Hawks their final score of the day and a 4-0 advantage.
  • STAC added a goal with under a minute remaining, but it was not enough as the Hawks sealed the three-goal victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Twp., Maine) logged 54:02 minutes in goal and recorded three saves, earning the victory. Falterer finished the final six minutes in net, finishing with two stops.
  • Davis recorded her fifth assist of the season on the game's first goal, tied for the team lead. Her 15 points (5g-5a+15pts) lead the Hawks, tied for fifth overall in the NE10.
  • Van den Akker posted her first collegiate goal for Saint Anselm in the 18th minute of play.
  • Lewandowski's two tallies mark a season-high for the junior, matching her career-high multi-point game as well with four points. Forster also registered her second goal of the season.
  • The 8-2 start for Saint Anselm is the team's best start since 2019 when the Hawks started the year 12-2.
