Field Hockey Tripped Up by Southern New Hampshire, 4-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Saint Anselm field hockey team was tripped up by Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), 4-1, on Wednesday night. The Penmen handed the Hawks their second Northeast-10 Conference loss of the season dropping to a 4-2 conference record.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Penmen took an early 1-0 advantage in the opening five minutes of the game after Minke van de Poll buried the first shot of the contest past senior goalkeeper Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine). About three minutes later, van de Poll tallied her second goal of the game to put SNHU ahead 2-0.
  • In the second period, the Penmen won a penalty stroke at the 17:58 mark. Junior Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) stepped in net for the penalty stroke for Saint Anselm, but Emma Thibodeau's shot ended up going wide. Shortly after, junior Abby Breznyak (Oakland, Maine) ripped the first shot on target for the Hawks that Penmen goalkeeper Emma Peeters saved.
  • With a couple of minutes left in the period, junior Grace Michael (Hampton Falls, N.H.) notched her first goal of the season off the assist from Breznyak to make it 3-1 heading into halftime.
  • SNHU started the third period on the attack with van de Poll firing another shot on the frame that McConnell was able to deny. Mia Fischer scored her second goal of the season at the 34:22 mark to give the Penmen a 4-1 lead.
  • Saint Anselm earned two penalty corners in the fourth period and senior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) registered the only shot on target for the Hawks, but SNHU would secure the victory by a final score of 4-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • The Penmen outshot the Hawks 9-7 and held a slight 6-5 margin in shots on goal.
  • Michael posted the lone goal of the game for Saint Anselm, her first of the season and second in her career, while Breznyak tallied her sixth assist.
  • Van de Poll notched a hat-trick in the win for SNHU while Fischer scored the Penmen's fourth goal.
  • McConnell ended the day with two saves and allowed four goals for the Hawks while her counterpart registered four saves and allowed one goal.
