Women's hockey opens season with pair of Hockey East opponents

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team opens the 2023-24 season with a pair of contests against Hockey East opponents this week, traveling to Lawler Rink in North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack on Friday, Sept. 29 before hosting the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Sullivan Arena.

The opening puck drop on Friday's season opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Saturday's contest is set for a 3 p.m. start.

The Hawks posted a 18-17-4 overall record a season ago and were 14-6-4 in league play, earning the No. 2 seed in the 2023 New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) tournament. The appearance marked the program's fifth appearance in the league's postseason tournament, which as of 2022-23 receives an automatic bid to the NCAA National Collegiate Championship. The Hawks advanced to the championship for the fifth time, taking on Long Island University (LIU). Along the way, Saint Anselm defeated Saint Michaels in a best-of-three series, needing overtime in the if necessary game to advance. The Hawks then defeated Stonehill College in the semifinals to set-up the title tilt, with the Sharks of LIU earning the 2-0 win and league title.

The Warriors finished 9-25-2 last season, 5-20-2 in Hockey East (10th/10). Merrimack upset Boston University 5-4 in overtime of the Hockey East opening round, advancing to play Northeastern in the second round, before their season came to an end with a 5-1 loss to the Huskies.

The Wildcats finished 12-21-3 overall and 9-15-3 in Hockey East (8th/10). Like the Warriors, UNH posted an opening round win in the Hockey East Tournament, defeating Holy Cross 6-3 before bowing out with a 2-1 overtime loss to the University of Vermont.
               
HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks revealed their captains for the 2023-24 season with senior Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) donning the "C." Fellow seniors Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) and Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.), along with junior Tyra Turner (Andover, Mass.), will wear the "A" and serve as the alternates.
  • The Hawks return four of their top five goal scorers from 2022-23 and an offense that ranked 13th nationally. Leading the way a season ago was Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Her 0.56 goals per game ranked 23rd nationally and second in the NEHWA. In her first season in a Hawks sweater, Tulchinsky netted 20 goals and registered 22 assists for 42 points. The BC transfer tied for second in the league in goals, second in assists, and third in points. She skated in 31 regular season games and recorded at least one point in 19 contests, going for multiple points in 11 of those tilts. Tulchinksy found the twine three times on the power play while matching a team-high with two shorthanded goals. The junior concluded the regular season with her first career hat trick on Feb. 17 and followed that up with four assists on Feb. 18. On the year, Tulchinsky finished third on the team with 135 shots and held a +13 on-ice rating.
  • Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) posted 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points. The NEWHA Rookie of the Year in 2021-22, Turner collected Second Team All-NEWHA honors for the second straight season. Turner tied for second in the NEWHA in goals while sitting in a tie for third in assists. Her 38 points was fourth-most in the league. Turner claimed the NEWHA Player of the Week honor once during the season and led the Hawks with 152 shots on goal. She also had a nine-game point streak from Jan. 20 – Feb. 24. The now junior registered three assists in a single game twice last season, once at Sacred Heart on Oct. 29 and then against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 27. She also tallied a team-high six power play goals while adding two shorthanded tallies and was credited with two game-winning goals.
  • The Hawks will look for someone to fill the shoes of NEWHA Player of the Year Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) who graduated after a stellar career with the Hawks. Golini ranked second in the NEWHA with 44 points coming from 18 goals and 26 assists. The graduate student co-captain ranked fourth in the league in goals while leading in assists. In 2022-23, Golini joined the 100-point club, becoming just the ninth student-athlete in program history to do so. Golini also set the program record for career games played and appeared in 132 contests across four seasons of competition. Golini's 44 points in 2022-23 are the most in a single season in team annals. In 132 games as a member of the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey program, Golini had 58 goals and assisted on 63 others for 121 points, ranking fourth in program history in career points, fifth in goals, tied for third in assists.
  • Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.) (formerly Brooklyn Pancoast) goes by a new name this season after being officially adopted this summer by her step-father. The now sophomore tallied 14 goals in her first season with the Hawks, fourth-best on the roster. She added 11 assists for 25 total points.
  • Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) rounds out the list of double-digit goal scorers returning from 2022-23, having tallied 12 goals. Her 20 helpers was third-best on the roster as the junior finished with 32 points on the year and a plus-10 on-ice rating.
  • Head coach Jen Kindret enters her third season at the helm of the program with a 34-30-7 overall mark in her two seasons piloting the Hawks program.
  • The Hawks were slated second in the 2023-24 NEWHA Preseason Coach's Poll, five points behind reigning champion LIU, who received six of the eight first place votes. Stonehill, Sacred Heart and Franklin Pierce rounded out the top five slots while Post, Assumption and Saint Michael's were slotted sixth through eighth.
  • New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) finished the 2022-23 season with a 2-10 mark against Hockey East (WHEA) teams. Franklin Pierce picked up one of the two wins for NEWHA teams, a 4-1 victory over Holy Cross. The other victory came from LIU, who posted a 1-0 victory over Maine.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
  • The Warriors opened the season a week ago, suffering a two-game sweep at the hands of Clarkson University, falling 5-0 and 3-0 in Potsdam, N.Y.
  • Merrimack enters the game looking for some offense, being shut out in both their opening contests. The Warriors are 0-10 on the Power Play.
  • Sophomore goaltender Calli Hogarth suffered the loss in both games for the Warriors. In 120 minutes between the pipes she has recorded 46 saves and currently holds a .852 save percentage.
ALL-TIME vs. MERRIMACK
  • The Hawks are 0-1 all-time against their neighbors to the south, with the first-ever meeting between the two programs coming New Year's Eve, 2022. Golini notched her 100th career point against the Warriors, but Saint Anselm was unable to overcome a three goal deficit to start the game, falling 4-2.  
SCOUTING UNH
  • This marks the season-opener for the Wildcats, who did skate to a 4-3 overtime win against New Brunswick last Sunday, Sept. 24 in an exhibition contest at the Wittermore Center. Four different players scored in the effort, with Kira Juodikis recording the OT winner.
ALL-TIME vs. UNH
  • Saint Anselm is 0-1 all-time against their in-state foes, falling by a 4-2 margin on Jan. 2, 2023. The Hawks held 1-0 and 2-1 leads in that contest (Golini, Jackson) but UNH countered with three unanswered goals to skate to the 4-2 victory in Durham.
