HOW IT HAPPENED
- Merrimack wasted no time on the attack with Maria Lindberg firing a shot and forcing an early save from the Hawks freshman goalie Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.). The Warriors took a quick 1-0 advantage at the 1:22 mark after Celine Tedenby slotted the puck into the net off the assist from Sophie McKinley. Merrimack continued to push their offense ripping 13 shots in the span of seven minutes with Stagman denying 10 of the shots and senior captain Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Ella Ridge (Chicago, Ill.) each making a block. The Hawks earned a power play late in the period that helped generate some attacking momentum with junior Maddi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) testing Warriors goalie Ainsley Moulton with a shot, but the period would end with Merrimack leading by a goal.
- Saint Anselm evened the score thanks to senior captain Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) notching her first goal of the year in the sixth minute of the second period. The Warriors responded by registering 12 shots through the remainder of the period with Stagman posting another eight saves to keep Merrimack off the scoreboard.
- Midway through the third period, Merrimack found the back of the net again with Payten Evans scoring from the top of the point to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. With about five minutes remaining in the third period, Teghan Inglis extended Merrimack's led to 3-1. Saint Anselm continued to battle after emptying their net at the 19:31 mark of the period. Junior Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) and Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.) each fired a shot on frame that Moulton was able to save. Junior captain Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) passed the puck to McCaffery who then drilled it into the net again for the Hawks with seconds left in the period, however, Merrimack would ultimately secure the 3-2 win.
