Field Hockey Fall to Franklin Pierce University, 2-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The No.4 nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team fell to Franklin Pierce University by a final score of 2-1 on Tuesday night during a Northeast-10 Conference game at Sodexo Field. The Hawks are now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the loss to the Ravens.

  • The Hawks host Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday, Sept. 28th for a make-up contest from early this season. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time at Grappone Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Anselm fired the first shot of the game with junior Stephanie Sutton-Brown (Ashby, Mass.) putting the ball on frame and forcing an early save from the Ravens goalkeeper Zoe Noorlag. Junior Ava Rayfield (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) ripped two shots on target that Noorlag was able to clear out of danger. The Ravens earned a penalty corner at the 11:51 mark resulting in a score by Rebecca Phillips to put Franklin Pierce up 1-0. 
  • The Ravens got on the board again early in the second period with Silver Clukey tallying a goal to make it 2-0 Franklin Pierce. Senior Abby Bevens (Pelham, N.H.) fired the only other shot on target for the Hawks in the period and would head to halftime down two goals. 
  • In the third period, Saint Anselm registered five shots on goal with three from Bevens and a pair of shots from Rayfield. The Hawks however couldn't break through heading into the final period of still down 2-0. 
  • Sophomore Marissa Politano (Acton, Mass.) fired a quick shot in the opening minutes of the fourth period that Noorlag was able to save. The Hawks attack continued to put pressure on the Ravens defense posting another three shots on target. In the final minute of the game, Politano found the back of the net to make it 2-1 with her second goal of the season, but Franklin Pierce would take the 2-1 victory over the Hawks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Politano posted the lone goal of the match for Saint Anselm, her second goal of the season. 
  • Bevens posted a season-high six shots in the game, all on target. Rayfield also tallied a season-high four shots on frame for the Hawks. 
  • McConnell made one save in the match and allowed two goals.
