SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team competed in the first day of the IVHOF Division II East Region Clash on Friday, Sept. 15 hosted by American International College. The Hawks fell to Bentley University, 3-1, in the first match before picking up their sixth win of the season by a final score of 3-0 against Holy Family University in the final contest. The score against Bentley was 25-19, 25-7, 26-24, 25-17. Saint Anselm defeated Holy Family by set scores of 25-21, 25-11, 25-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Bentley)
- Bentley jumped ahead to an early 4-0 advantage to start the first set of the match. Saint Anselm responded by connecting 4 straight points featuring a kill and ace from senior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and a kill by senior Emma Adams (Gary, Texas). After back-to-back service aces from Elizabeth Blinn put the Falcons up 10-6, junior Jada Burdier (Haverhill, Mass.) strung together three consecutive aces to tie the set at 10-10. Freshman Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) tallied her second kill of the match off the assist from sophomore Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Calif.) to cut Bentley's led to two points midway through the set. Senior Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) registered a block and a kill late in the set, but the Falcons pulled away with a 4-0 run to win set one by a score of 25-19.
- The Falcons generated a quick 6-1 lead to kick off the second set. Three kills by Frano helped disrupt Bentley's momentum before going on an 11-0 run. Adams added a pair of kills late in the set however Bentley would secure the 25-7 win.
- In the third set, Bentley took an early 8-3 lead before Saint Anselm went on a 6-1 run highlighted by two kills from Brown and a block from both Wetjen and Macalaguim to tie the game at 9-9. After both teams exchanged points midway through the set, Frano notched a kill followed by an ace to even the score at 20-20. Lauren Hallas gave Bentley the 24-23 edge with her service ace, but the Hawks connected the final three points thanks to a pair of kills from Adams and an ace by Macalaguim to win set three 26-24.
- Wetjen tallied her third block of the match to tie the fourth set at 3-3. The Hawks were down 11-5 after Bentley pulled away with an 8-2 run. Macalaguim narrowed the Falcon's lead to two points thanks to her service ace to make it 12-10. An 8-1 run by Bentley extended their advantage to 20-11. Freshman Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) registered her first kill of the day along with an assist to Frano late in the set, but Bentley would seal the 3-1 victory after winning the fourth set by a 25-17 final score.
HOW IT HAPPENED (vs. Holy Family)
- Shelby Kinzer got Holy Family on the board first with a kill to open the second match of the day for the Hawks. A kill by Adams and back-to-back aces from Brown put Saint Anselm ahead 3-1. After exchanging a few points, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead making it 10-6. Kinzer's kill midway through the set gave Holy Family their largest advantage over Saint Anselm. The Hawks continued to battle generating a late 6-0 run featuring kills from Wetjen, Frano, and Kocak to shrink the Tiger's advantage to 19-17. Wetjen tallied a pair of kills to help Saint Anselm win the first set by a final score of 25-21.
- In the second set, the Hawks jumped ahead with a 5-1 lead highlighted by four consecutive kills. Saint Anselm continued to grow their advantage to 10 points thanks to a block by Wetjen and Macalaguim to make it 14-4. After furthering the lead to 18-8, sophomore Anastasia Karaban (Northborough, Mass.) tabbed her first kill of the day followed by an ace from fifth-year Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.). Frano buried her sixth kill of the set to secure the 25-11 win and improve the Hawks to 2-0 in the match.
- Saint Anselm carried their momentum from the previous set to take a quick 6-3 advantage in the third set. The Tigers kept the game close midway through the set with both teams exchanging points. Senior Alina Barbarena (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a service ace to give the Hawks a 17-10 lead. Saint Anselm dominated the rest of the set with Brown notching three kills while Macalaguim, Wetjen, and Adams also posted a kill apiece to take the third set, 25-16, and defeat Holy Family by a 3-0 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Brown ended the day with 21 total kills to go along with 18 digs, two assists, and three aces. Frano tallied 20 kills for the Hawks as well as 13 digs, four service aces, and an assist.
- Wetjen earned 11 kills against Holy Family, one short of her season-high, and finished the day with 5 total blocks.
- On the passing effort, Macalaguim registered 54 assists for Saint Anselm in addition to four kills and three aces.
- Karaban tabbed her first kill of the season for the Hawks in the 3-0 victory over the Tigers.
