Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore Irene Garbo (Assemini, Sardinia, Italy) represented the Saint Anselm College women's tennis team on Friday, Sept. 15 at the 2023 ITA Division II Women's East Regional Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Garbo fell in the second round of the championship in a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9.
 
Garbo was among 80 student-athletes competing at the championship and received a first-round bye after coming into the tournament as the No. 29 seed. She faced off against Bipasha Mehn from Dominican University (N.Y.) who had defeated Nele Haag of Chestnut Hill, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of the competition.
 
After dropping the first set, 6-2, Garbo was able to fight her way back in the second set. She found herself down 3-1 early in set two, but rallied by taking five of the next seven games to win the set by a score of 6-3 and force a third-set tiebreaker. Garbo battled against Mehn in the third set, eventually falling, 11-9
 
Garbo is just the second student-athlete in program history to qualify for the ITA East Regional Singles, joining Jess Perkins '18, who participated in 2016.
