Davis Hat-Trick Lifts Field Hockey Past Saint Michael's College, 5-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team defeated Saint Michael's College, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field. The Hawks earned their third straight win of the season with the victory over the Purple Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Anselm was on the attacking front early in the first period of play ripping 2-of-3 shots on target in the opening three minutes. At the 3:28 mark, senior Maddie Davis (Exeter, N.H.) tallied her first goal of the season off a centering pass from senior Abby Bevens (Pelham, N.H.) to put the Hawks up 1-0. A couple of minutes later, Davis got on the board again after drilling the ball into the lower left corner assisted by junior Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) to take a 2-0 advantage. The Purple Knights responded after winning a penalty corner in the sixth minute with Bridgie Loughlin notching her second goal of the season to make it 2-1. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie McConnell (Township Concord, Maine) registered her first save of the game off a shot from Danielle Cummings. Bevens extended Saint Anselm's lead to 3-1 after launching a shot that redirected off a defender in the last four minutes of the second period. 
  • At the start of the third period, Davis tallied her third goal of the afternoon after tipping the ball past Joelle Cameron from an assist by junior Ava Rayfield (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine). Junior Stephanie Sutton-Brown (Ashby, Mass.) joined in on the scoring at the 36:52 mark to make it 5-1 with classmate Abby Breznyak (Oakland, Maine) earning the assist. 
  • Junior Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) checked in for the Hawks in the final period of the game. Loughlin found the back of the net again in the opening minutes off the assist from Chloe Sapienza to make it 5-2. Midway through the period, sophomore Millie Forster (Cheshire, England) ripped her first shot on target that Cameron was able to clear. Freshman Olivia Baran (Swampscott, Mass.) got a late shot off in the final miutes of play that would end up going wide, but the Hawks would secure the 5-2 victory over Saint Michael's. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm outshot Saint Michael's 15-9 and held a 10-7 margin in shots on goal. 
  • Davis recorded her first career hat-trick for the Hawks while Bevens and Sutton-Brown each tallied their second goals of the season. 
  • McConnell registered five saves and allowed two goals for Saint Anselm. Falterer made her first appearance this season after checking into the game for the fourth period.
