PREVIEW: No. 12 Men's lacrosse meets No. 1 Le Moyne in NE10 Semifinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team heads to Syracuse, N.Y. to meet Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 Conference Semifinal Round matchup on Wednesday, May 3.

Tickets will be sold upon entry to the facility and will cost $10 for adults. Youth (under 18 years of age) and senior citizens may gain entry for $5 with students from Northeast-10 institutions admitted free of charge with valid institutional identification.

The Hawks advanced to the NE10 Semifinals with a 15-12 win over the fourth-seed Pace on Apr. 29. With the win, Saint Anselm improved to 9-3 on the season and will be making an appearance in the conference Semifinal Round for the third-consecutive season.

The Dolphins earned the top-seed for the conference postseason tournament and received a bye into the Semifinal Round. The team concluded an undefeated regular season at 14-0 with a 10-9 win over Adelphi University on Apr. 25.

The winner of this semifinal matchup will advance to the NE10 Championship game on Saturday, May 6 and will meet the winner of the second-seed Bentley University and the third-seed Adelphi for the conference crown.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks moved up to No. 12 in Monday's edition of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II National Poll.
  • Senior Ryan Slattery (North Andover, Mass.) headlined the NE10 All-Conference Teams as the Defensive Player of the Year. It is the second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year for the senior as he becomes the first Saint Anselm student-athlete to collect the honor multiple times in a career.
  • Joining Slattery on the First Team was junior Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and senior Will Harvey (Franklin, Mass.) while junior Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and senior Andrew Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) slotted in on the Second Team with senior Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) netting Third Team honors.
  • Freshmen Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.), Quinn Gannon (Scituate, Mass.), and Colby Goodchild (Reading, Mass.) were named to the All-Rookie Team.
  • Noah Larsen and Andrews are tied for the Hawks lead with 34 points each this season. Larsen has netted 19 goals and added a team-high 15 assists while Andrews leads the squad with 30 goals and has added four assists.
  • Larsen has scored 55 goals while adding 44 assists for 99 career points. The junior needs just one point to reach the 100 career point mark and in doing so, would become the 24th student-athlete to hit 100 points in program history.
  • Senior Jack Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) is second on the team in both goals (20) and assists (12) but ranks third on the team with 32 points.
  • Junior Chase Lilly (Trumbull, Conn.), Claflin, and sophomore Will Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) have all netted double-digit goals for the Hawks offense.
  • Nick Larsen needs just three points to reach 100 for his career. He has scored 37 goals and assisted on 60 in 38 games played on the Hilltop.
  • Senior Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) has won 104-of-179 faceoffs this season, good for a 0.581-win percentage. Yannone also leads the Hawks with 66 ground balls, bringing him to a total of 220 for his collegiate career.
  • Yannone needs just six ground balls to match Justin Steele '14 for the program record in career ground balls.
  • Junior Henry Alford (Southborough, Mass.) leads the Hawks with 15 caused turnover this season while junior Jonathan Holland (Derry, N.H.), senior Ethan Dolan (Littleton, Mass.), and Slattery all have double-digit caused turnovers in 2023.
  • Senior David Olsen (Salem, N.H.) has started in all 12 games for the Hawks from the cage. Olsen has an 8.53 goals-against average and a 0.506 save percentage, totaling 90 saves this season.
SCOUTING LE MOYNE
  • The Dolphins remained as the top team in the USILA Division II National Poll.
  • Le Moyne had 11 student-athletes named to the NE10 All-Conference teams including the NE10's Player of the Year in Joey Pezzimenti.
  • Pezzimenti is tied for second in the NE10 in points with 58, coming from 34 goals and 24 assists. Pezzimenti ranks eighth in the conference in goals and is tied for fifth in helpers.
  • Kyle Caves is second on the squad with 25 goals with Isaac Frechette in third at 21.
  • Seth Benedict and Ethan Lou are second and third on the Dolphins roster with 20 and 18 assists each respectively.
  • Nico Mattia has won 155-of-288 faceoffs this season, good for a 0.538-win percentage. He also leads the team with 81 ground balls.
  • Matt Vavonese and Dom DelPonte are tied for the Le Moyne lead with 10 caused turnovers apiece.
  • Vavonese has started all 14 games in the goal for the Dolphins. He owns a league-best 7.11 goals-against average and has a 0.588 save percentage. Vavonese has made 124 saves on the season.
ALL-TIME, NE10 POSTSEASON
  • The Hawks own a 7-15 record all-time in the NE10 postseason and have reached the semifinal round in three consecutive seasons of competition.
  • Saint Anselm has reached the semifinal round on four occasions overall and has advanced to the finals twice, finishing as the runner-up both times.
  • The Hawks posted a 15-12 win over Pace University to reach the semifinals, marking their most recent win in the conference postseason tournament.
  • Le Moyne and Saint Anselm last met in the NE10 postseason on May 4, 2022, also from Syracuse, N.Y. Le Moyne posted a 15-11 win in the that game to advance to the conference championship contest.
ALL-TIME vs. LE MOYNE
  • The Hawks and Dolphins will be meeting for the 33rd time in the all-time series and second time in 2023. Le Moyne is 31-1 all-time against Saint Anselm in men's lacrosse.
  • The Dolphins snuck away with a 9-8 victory, also in Syracuse, N.Y., on Mar. 18, 2023. Le Moyne netted a pair of goals in the final two minutes of regulation to capture the win.
  • Le Moyne and Saint Anselm have met in each of the previous two NE10 postseason tournaments.
