ERIE, Pa. – The Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team suffered a narrow 10-9 defeat to Mercyhurst University in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday.
With the loss, the Hawks see their season come to a close at 10-5 overall while the Lakers improve to 15-2 and will head to Le Moyne College in the Semifinals on Sunday, May 21.
Senior
Jack Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.) led the Hawks with three goals on the day while juniors
Nick Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and
Noah Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) netted one goal and added one assist apiece. Four other Saint Anselm student-athletes scored one goal in the contest.
With his first-half goal,
Nick Larsen reached the 100-career points mark through 41 career games played.
Junior
Anthony Kubik (Chicago, Ill.) turned aside 18 shots on goal from the cage for the Hawks, which is a season-high.
Following a score from
Jeremy Phoenix-Lefebvre with 2:06 left in the fourth quarter which gave Mercyhurst a 10-9 lead, the Lakers won the ensuing faceoff and a shot attempt from
Myles Hamm which was turned aside by Kubik gave the Hawks possession.
A successful clear and a timeout allowed the Hawks to draw up a play for sophomore
Joe Lombardi (Holliston, Mass.), but his shot attempt was saved. With time winding down, the Hawks applied pressure on Mercyhurst and forced them into a turnover with just 10 seconds remaining.
Noah Larsen would get the final scoring chance with a shot attempt but that shot was blocked, giving the Lakers the 10-9 win.
Earlier in the contest, the Lakers opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the first quarter on a goal from Hamm. Hamm would find the back of the net with 10:53 remaining in the first to double the lead in favor ot the hosts, 2-0.
Nick Larsen got Saint Anselm on the scoreboard just over two minutes later. That score marked the 100th career point for the junior midfielder.
Lombardi and Andrews would combine for one goal apiece just 1:26 apart which gave Saint Anselm its first lead of the contest at 3-2, which would be the score through 15 minutes of action.
Hamm scored his third goal of the game with a score in the opening-minute of the second quarter before sophomore
Colin Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) regained the Hawks lead at 4-3.
Shawn Doran would win the ensuing faceoff for the Lakers and drive to the goal as he tied the score at 7:50, just eight seconds after Mulvey's tally.
The sides would trade chances in the remaining time of the first half but neither side could find the back of the cage as Saint Anselm and Mercyhurst headed to the half tied at 4-4.
Noah Larsen got the scoring started in the second half with 11:31 left in the third but that was quickly answered by
Ethan Landymore.
Landymore would score back-to-back goals to give Mercyhurst a 6-5 lead but Andrews and junior
Chase Lilly (Trumbull, Conn.) recorded consecutive goals to reestablish the Hawks lead at 7-6.
Just 40 seconds after the Hawks scored to take the lead, Phoenix-Lefebvre knotted the score once more at seven before junior
Henry Alford (Southborough, Mass.) scooped up a loose ball on the ensuing faceoff and drove to the goal. The long-stick midfielder converted on his scoring chance to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead through three quarters of play.
Mercyhurst would tie the score with 8:21 left in regulation from the cross of
Braden McCard but Andrews replied with his third of the game just 2:03 later, pushing the score to 9-8.
The Lakers tied the score once more at 4:01 on a goal from
Nicholas Mabe before taking the lead at 2:06 on the second tally of the contest from Phoenix-Lefebvre.
Mercyhurst held a slight 43-42 edge in shot attempts including a 28-19 advantage in shots on goal. Saint Anselm was 20-for-27 in clear attempts compared to 18-for-21 for the Lakers.
Freshman
Quinn Gannon (Scituate, Mass.) and senior
Craig Yannone (Lynnfield, Mass.) combined for 13-of-23 faceoff wins for the Hawks. The duo limited the top faceoff winning team in all of Division II to a 43.4-win percentage in the contest.
