WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior
Taylor Cobain (East Greenwich, R.I.) became the 12th member of the 100-goal club in the Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team's 14-10 loss at Bentley University on Wednesday.
With the loss, the Hawks, who are ranked No. 17 in the most recent ILWomen/IWLCA Division II National Poll, drop to 11-4 on the season with a 7-4 record in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Falcons, who are ranked No. 15 in the same poll, improve to 10-5 overall and 8-3 in league contests.
Cobain was tied for the Hawks lead with junior
Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) for goals in the contest with three each. Senior
Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.) found the back of the cage twice on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped 13 shots on goal for the Hawks. The sophomore has now made double-digit saves in each of the last four games and in seven of the last eight games.
Bentley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead just 3:03 into the first quarter as
Maeve Johnson and
Kenzie Lupton combined for the goals, two of which were scored by Johnson.
Cobain got Saint Anselm on the scoreboard with 10:52 left in the opening 15 minutes, pushing the score to 3-1. However, the Falcons would use a four-goal run to take a 7-1 lead in the first minute of the second quarter.
Palmisano and junior
Maggie Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) netted back-to-back goals for the Hawks, coming just 59 seconds apart from each other to keep the scoring in the Hawks favor.
Sullivan and
Stephanie McAuliffe traded goals down the stretch headed to the halftime intermission. The Falcons held a 9-4 advantage through 30 minutes of play.
After the Falcons opened the scoring in the third quarter, the Hawks would net three consecutive goals coming from the crosses from Cobain, Sullivan, and sophomore
Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.), which made the score 10-7.
Bentley would outscore the Hawks 3-1 in the final 6:48 of the third quarter as the hosts led 13-8 through three quarters of action.
Palmisano and Sullivan netted consecutive goals in the fourth frame, cutting the Falcons lead to three. However, Lupton capped the scoring in the contest at 6:26 of the fourth, giving Bentley the 14-10 win.
Bentley held a 33-31 edge in shot attempts including a 27-21 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons scooped up 20 ground balls compared to 13 for the Hawks. Both sides claimed 14 draw controls in the contest.
Rivet, Sullivan, and junior
Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) led the Hawks with two ground balls apiece.
Palmisano caused two turnovers, which was a team-high, and was credited with a game-high seven draw controls.
The Hawks will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Apr. 29 when they host The College of Saint Rose from Grappone Stadium. The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
