CLERMONT, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team picked up a split on Saturday, defeating Dominican (N.Y.) in the opener before falling to Saint Cloud State to conclude the day's action.
Saint Anselm exits play with a 7-3 overall record through its first 10 games, all played away from the snowy Hilltop. At the midway point of their eight-game slate at The Spring Games, the Hawks will play Trevecca Nazarene and Wayne State (Nebraska) on Sunday, Mar. 5.
The Hawks picked up a 5-0 shutout of the Chargers to open the day as Saint Anselm pounded out 11 hits. Junior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits all afternoon, securing her 26th career victory to move to 10th on the program's all-time list.
Hicks also fanned her 205th batter in the opening game, passing Megan Lemire '10 to place 10th on the all-time strikeouts list.
In the second game of the day, Saint Cloud State took advantage of four fielding errors by the Hawks, including two in the first two innings that led to three runs. Sophomore Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) had two hits for Saint Anselm from the lead-off spot and scored her team's lone run of the afternoon.

The Hawks jumped ahead by a 1-0 margin in the third inning as sophomore Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) drove home junior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to put Saint Anselm on the scoreboard. Later in the inning, sophomore Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) slammed a two-run homer, driving in Wironen for a 3-0 advantage.
Caputo delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring freshman Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) on the play, and later drove in the team's fifth run with a single to left field in the sixth inning, creating the final 5-0 margin of victory.
Hicks fanned nine batters and Caputo led Saint Anselm with three hits with Wironen and senior Jess Persechino (Torrington, Conn.) picking up two hits as well.

The first three runs for the Huskies were scored off of Saint Anselm errors.
Saint Anselm utilized an RBI single by O'Hara in the sixth inning, trimming the deficit to 3-1, but a two-run double in the seventh inning preceded a sacrifice fly by Saint Cloud State created the final 6-1 score.
Caputo added two of her team's five hits, finishing the day with five hits for Saint Anselm.
The tandem of sophomore Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) yielded three earned runs in seven innings.
