Softball downs Wayne State (Neb.) in five innings, falls to Clarion

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Saint Anselm College softball team posted a convincing 8-0 run-rule victory over Wayne State (Neb.) College on Sunday after dropping a 6-3 result to Clarion University in the first contest of the day.

Saint Anselm (8-4) wraps up its eight-game trip at The Spring Games on Monday against Wayne State once again and Bemidji State starting at 9 a.m. The Wildcats fall to 1-0 on the season while Clarion evens its record at 5-5.

Six Hawks batters rapped two hits in the two games, including junior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who posted a team-best two doubles, driving in two runs. Senior Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) and sophomore Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) also picked up extra-base hits for Saint Anselm

Sophomore Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) slugged a home run for Saint Anselm in the game, extending her hitting streak to four games with her lead-off blast in game one – in that span, she has delivered eight hits in 14 at-bats (.571) with three runs batted in via a double, triple and a home run.

With the victory over the Wildcats, Hawks head coach Jill Gagnon sits just one victory away from 250 across a 10-season career on the Hilltop.

Caputo homered to lead off the game and Wiberg drove home two just five batters later, creating an early 3-0 advantage for the Hawks.

It was all Clarion from there as the Golden Eagles scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning on three hits and an error. The big blast was a two-run home run with two outs in the stanza.

In total, the Hawks left eight runners on base as the Clarion starting pitcher fanned nine Saint Anselm batters.

A trio of Saint Anselm pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs as four of the six runs scored were unearned.

After pitching three innings with five strikeouts in the Clarion clash, junior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) conceded just two hits while striking out four batters. She is now 6-0 on the season in the circle for the Hawks.

Fitzpatrick walked Saint Anselm off with a single to center field, ending the game in run-rule fashion. The Hawks scored all eight of their runs in the bottom of the fifth, securing the victory.

Driving in two runs in the inning, Fitzpatrick was assisted by runs driven in by freshman Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly and a two-run double by O'Hara. For Reitmeyer, it was her first collegiate run driven in.
