PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College softball team was swept in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Pace University on Sunday by scores of 4-3 and 7-1.
The Hawks drop to 11-9 on the season and 1-3 in NE10 play while the Setters improve to 8-10 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Saint Anselm is scheduled to make home opener on Saturday, Apr. 1 against Le Moyne College, starting at 12 p.m.
Senior
Kate Irwin (Milford, Mass.) led the Hawks in the doubleheader with three hits in five at-bats with sophomore
Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) and senior
Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) registering two hits apiece.
Caputo collected a team-high two runs batted in with sophomore
Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore
Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) earning two each.
Junior
Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) and Wiberg suffered the losses from the pitching circle for Saint Anselm.
GAME ONE: Pace 4, Saint Anselm 3
The Hawks got a pair of runners on base via a walk and a single with two outs in the top of the first but the Setters would get out of the inning with a strikeout.
Saint Anselm would strike first in the top of the second inning as Caputo doubled to score junior
Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Irwin, both of who singled earlier in the frame, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Pace scored a pair of runs in their half of the second inning to knot the score at two.
Brianna Shea and
Alexandra Tejeda reached on a walk and a double.
Raelle Gorman would single home one before
Jenny Gordon registered a sacrifice fly to push the score to 2-2.
The Setters took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run double from
Kaylee Matsuda. Pace had loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk before the go-ahead two-bagger.
The Hawks loaded the bases themselves with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and a single from Wiberg scored junior
Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who walked earlier in the frame. However, Pace got out of the jam on a fielder's choice to maintain its 4-3 advantage.
Saint Anselm got a pair of runners on base in the top of the sixth inning but could not push across the equalizing run. In the top of the seventh, the Hawks would down in order as Pace grabbed a 4-3 win.
GAME TWO: Pace 7, Saint Anselm 1
The Hawks plated the first run of game two in the top of the third inning on a Tardugno sacrifice fly. Irwin walked to lead off the inning before stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Pace took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles from
Carolina Iturriaga and
Alexa Borino.
The Setters tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Gwen Pederson managed keep the inning alive with a two-out single before three consecutive walks scored one run which was followed by a two-run single and a two-run double to push the score to 7-1.
Saint Anselm managed to get one runner on base in the top of the seventh inning as freshman
Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) worked a walk but the contest would end on a line out.
