MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team posted a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader sweep of Le Moyne College on Monday in the team's home debut for the 2023 season.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 13-9 on the season with a 3-3 record in NE10 contests while the Dolphins drop to 11-14 overall and 0-4 in conference games.
Sophomore
Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) led the Hawks offense with four hits on the day, two of which went for two bases. Sophomore
Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) and senior
Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.) collected three hits apiece. Wiberg, Tardugno, and junior
Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were credited with three runs batted in each on the day.
O'Hara eclipsed the 100-career hits mark with a single in the bottom of the first inning of game one on Monday.
Junior
Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) matched career-high with 14 strikeouts in the game one win, improving to 9-2 on the season. Hicks allowed just four hits in the complete game shutout. Sophomore
Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) grabbed her third win of the season in game two after allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three in the five-inning complete game.
GAME ONE: Saint Anselm 1, Le Moyne 0
The first seven Le Moyne outs of the game would come via a Hicks strikeout. However, the Dolphins managed to get a runner to second in the top of the third inning. The junior pitcher would catch a line drive back up the middle to strand the runner at second.
Senior
Kate Irwin (Milford, Mass.) singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. She would also be stranded at second as Le Moyne got a pop out and a ground out to get out of the inning.
Saint Anselm struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fitzpatrick led off the inning with a single before scoring six pitches later on double to right center field by Wiberg.
Saint Anselm had a strong chance to add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Wiberg registered a one-out double. Freshman
Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) came on to pinch run but she would be left at second as Le Moyne registered a strikeout and a line out to keep the Hawks lead at one.
The Dolphins would go three up, three down in the top of the seventh as Saint Anselm claimed a 1-0 win in game one.
GAME TWO: Saint Anselm 11, Le Moyne 3
Both sides managed to get two runners on base in the opening inning but neither was able to capitalize on the scoring chances.
The Hawks struck for four runs in the bottom of the second inning as a bases loaded single from Tardugno scored one run before O'Hara cleared the bases with a double, giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Alyssa Dybacz got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a solo home run to left center field, pushing the score to 4-1 in the top of the third inning.
With runners on second and third, Wiberg would deliver a single up the middle to plate both runners as the Hawks led 6-1 through four innings of play.
A pair of RBI singles for
Mckenzie Bergdoll and
Frankie Larobardi cut the Hawks lead to three in the top of the fifth inning.
However, Saint Anselm tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab an 11-3 win in five innings. Tardugno doubled down the left field line to score two runs before a Fitzpatrick single plated one more run. Sophomore
Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) recorded an infield to single to drive in a fourth run with classmate
Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) walking off the contest with a four-pitch walk.
Saint Anselm is slated to return to the South Athletic Fields for a conference doubleheader against The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday, Apr. 4 with game times scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
