Baseball falls in non-league doubleheader to Le Moyne

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its non-conference twinbill against Le Moyne College from the New England Baseball Complex on Friday by scores of 10-5 and 16-4.

The Hawks fall to 4-17 on the season while the Dolphins pull even at 11-11. Saint Anselm is slated to open Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play on Friday, Mar. 31 in the first game of a four-game weekend series against crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University.

Juniors Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) led the Hawks offense with four hits apiece on the day. Seniors Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Ryan Scialabba (Cheshire, Conn.) added two hits each in the twinbill. Scialabba was credited with two runs batted in, in the games which was a team-high.

Saint Anselm hit three home runs on the day with one coming from senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), one from Scialabba, and one from sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.). For Scialabba, his big fly was the first of his collegiate career.

Juniors Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) and Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) posted their third and second start son the mound this season respectively.

GAME ONE: Le Moyne 10, Saint Anselm 5

The Hawks opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Pierro got the inning started with a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. Scialabba plated Pierro with a double down the right field line. After a single from Clough loaded the bases, Collins singled home one run before two more runs came around to score on a fielding error, giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

The Dolphins got three runs back in the top of the third as the team loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. A throwing error allowed one run to score which was followed by a two-run double from Wyatt Patchett.

Le Moyne would go on to plate six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Dolphins tied the score on an error following a walk and a single and took the lead, 6-4, on a two-run single from Nick Nevins. A double off the bat of Andrew Roden scored another run and an error and single plated one run each to give Le Moyne a 9-4 lead.

Brody Keneston led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run which pushed the Dolphins lead to 10-4.

The Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run from Scolaro, marking the fourth big fly of the season for the sophomore.

Saint Anselm would go three up, three down in each of its halves of the eighth and ninth innings as Le Moyne would take game one by a 10-5 margin.

GAME TWO: Le Moyne 16, Saint Anselm 4

The Dolphins crossed the plate first in game two, putting up six runs in the top of the second. Adam Sullivan opened the inning by reaching on an error and just two batters later, Benji Ries sent a two-run home run over the left field fence, giving Le Moyne a 2-0 lead. After a single, Nevins would hit the second two-run home run of the inning to double the Dolphins lead. With the bases loaded, Patchett would deliver a two-run double to cap the six-run inning.

Saint Anselm replied with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame as Pierro and Scialabba would hit back-to-back solo home runs to push the score to 6-2.

A two-run single in the top of the third from Roden, reestablished the Dolphins six run lead at 8-2.

In the top of the fourth, Sullivan sent a ball over the center field fence for a home run, extending the lead to 9-2.

The Hawks added two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Panarello registered a two-out triple and a single from Clough would bring home the senior before Williams singled up the middle to score Clough, making the score, 9-4.

Le Moyne would score for the fourth consecutive inning as they put up five runs in the top of the fifth, all with two outs. A hit by pitch and walk set up an RBI single for Keneston before another walk loaded the bases. Sullivan plated all three runners on a double before he scored on a double in the next at bat which made the score 14-4.

Keneston capped the scoring in the contest in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run.
