MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team handed out 27 assists on Tuesday, using a well-rounded offensive effort to down visiting American International College by an 83-64 margin in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Saint Anselm, receiving national votes in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improves to 16-6 overall on the season and to 12-4 versus NE10 foes. The Hawks have now won three of their last five games and will face Franklin Pierce this Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
Senior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) scored 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting, logging six assists, four rebounds and two blocks. Classmate Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) scored 15 points with eight rebounds and sophomore Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) produced 13 points with three rebounds and two helpers.
Senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) narrowly missed the double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds while junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) collected eight rebounds, seven assists (matched a career-high), six points and a team-best three steals.
Sophomore Keith Robinson (Phillip Island, Australia) scored 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Saint Anselm jumped ahead by a 10-2 score and led 16-9 after connecting on its first four three-point baskets. The Yellow Jackets took the lead just minutes later, but the Hawks pulled away for good with 25 of the game's next 35 points via 12-of-17 shooting – Robinson had eight points in that 10-plus minute span.
The Hawks used two second-half scoring runs of 12-4 and 14-5, building a game-high lead of 22 points (74-52) with 5:06 to go. Saint Anselm held onto the victory with 19 second-half rebounds while also recording 14 of the 17 assists in the final 20 minutes.
Saint Anselm enjoyed the final 38-to-26 advantage in rebounds and shot 55.6% from the floor and 10-for-22 (45.5%) from beyond the arc. The Hawks racked up 14 fast-break points and had 48 points in the paint.
