EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team suffered a pair of losses to nationally-regarded East Stroudsburg University in Sunday's doubleheader.
The Hawks drop to 1-8 on the season while the Warriors, who are receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association national poll and are ranked 19th in Division II in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, improve to 8-2 on the season. The squads will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Monday, Feb. 27 with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
Senior
Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.), sophomore
Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.), and junior
Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) led the Hawks with two hits apiece on the day. Scolaro was credited with two runs batted in the twinbill while junior
Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) earned one RBI.
Sophomore
Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) and junior
Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) drew starts on the mound for Saint Anselm. Junior
Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) and sophomore
Zachary Abbott (Gloucester, Mass.) posted 1.1 innings of scoreless work each on the day.
GAME ONE: East Stroudsburg 14, Saint Anselm 2
Ben Piripavel led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and quickly stole second to get East Stroudsburg in scoring position. Piripavel would score on a single by
Matt Ervolina to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. However, Betty would get out of the early trouble with strikeout and a pair of fly outs.
Pierro registered a one-out single and reached second on a wild pitch. After a fly out, Scolaro doubled to left field to plate Pierro and tie the score at one in the top of the second.
East Stroudsburg would cross the plate six times in the bottom of the second inning on five hits and one Saint Anselm error. Following back-to-back singles, a
Tommy Ajjan double plated two runs, giving the Warriors a 3-1 lead. An error and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for
Cameron Hubbard who doubled to score two more runs and another double followed a sacrifice fly to push the score to 7-1 in favor of the hosts.
The Warriors tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third and added four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 14-1 lead.
Senior
Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) would reach second following a groundout in the top of the sixth inning and would come around to score on a single by Scolaro, making the score its final of 14-2 in the seven-inning contest.
GAME TWO: East Stroudsburg 8, Saint Anselm 1
After two scoreless innings, it was the Hawks who crossed the plate first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third frame. Sophomore
Danny Kent (Whitman, Mass.) led off the inning with a triple to right center field and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Williams.
The Warriors responded with two in the bottom half of the inning as
Logan Stirr recorded a one-out single before Piripavel tripled to score Stirr. Piripavel later scored on a single by Ervolina to give the hosts a 2-1 lead through three.
The score would remain 2-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh. The Warriors struck for six in the inning on three hits and one error. Consecutive singles followed by a walk loaded the bases to lead off the inning. Ervolina recorded a sacrifice fly but a walk reloaded the bases and a hit by pitch scored a second run in the frame. An error allowed two more runs to score before
Victor Cruz capped the scoring with a two-run single, giving East Stroudsburg an 8-1 lead.
Vaughan suffered the loss in game two after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
