Women's basketball halted by Pace in NE10 First Round action

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team wrapped up its season on Friday with a 60-48 loss to Pace University in the First Round of the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs.

Saint Anselm, the No. 9 seed, finishes with a 12-15 overall record. Pace (13-15), the reigning NCAA Division II East Region Champions, entered play as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1-seeded Le Moyne on Sunday, Feb. 26.

The Hawks picked up two victories against the Setters during the regular season, but could not overcome the loss of two starters in Friday's defeat. In total, Saint Anselm committed 21 turnovers while the hosts had only seven miscues – Pace scored 15 points off Hawks turnovers in the win.

Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) scored 20 of her team's 48 points and posted eight of her team's 16 made field goals as the rest of the Hawks lineup was 8-for-27 (29.6%) from the floor. Senior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) scored 11 points and added eight rebounds for Saint Anselm.

Hoyt also matched career-highs with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Ouellette's eight rebounds also equaled a career-high output. As a team, the Hawks were 15-for-19 (78.9%) from the free throw line, finishing second in single-season team history with a 77.8% percentage (347-for-446).

Trailing by a 4-2 margin early in the game, Pace unleashed a 15-6 scoring run that saw them make all but one of their eight shots from the floor. Between the quarters, the Setters fired off a 10-0 run to build a 30-14 advantage.

Saint Anselm flipped the script leading up to halftime, scoring 14 of the final 22 points of the opening half to trim the Pace lead to 10, 38-28, at the break. The Hawks also enjoyed a 10-9 edge in third-quarter scoring, but could not fully complete the comeback.

With the hosts ahead by a 52-42 score with 7:17 left in regulation time, neither team scored for nearly four minutes as the Hawks could not muster a comeback.
