PREVIEW: Men's basketball tangles with Assumption, Saint Michael's

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team will face Assumption and Saint Michael's on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 18, respectively, as the regular-season schedule winds down.

Saint Anselm, receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Poll, improved to 17-6 on the season and to 13-4 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. The Hawks have won two in a row and have won nine of their 11 games this season.

Assumption owns a 12-12 overall record but is below .500 in NE10 play, checking in at 8-9. The Greyhounds have, however, won four games in a row, highlighted by a one-point victory over New Haven on Saturday – the Chargers are receiving votes nationally.

Saint Michael's began the week with a 10-15 record and will play Le Moyne on Wednesday. The Purple Knights have won just four of their 17 league games so far and began the week with a four-game losing streak that dates back to Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The Hawks will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against Saint Michael's.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm poured home 14 three-point baskets, easing its way to an 88-66 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Saturday. Ahead by only three points at the break, the Hawks took complete control of the game with a strong offensive output in the second half.
  • Against the Ravens, senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) scored 26 points, making 10 field goals and five triples, while classmate Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) reached 24 points and tacked on six rebounds. The team's 14 three-point baskets were the most on the road since Jan. 25, 2020 at Le Moyne.
  • Junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 16 points at Franklin Pierce while adding a team-best nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Senior Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) handed out four assists, matching sophomore Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) in that metric.
  • The Hawks are ranked sixth in NCAA Division II in fouls committed per game (13.3) and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (40.8%). The Hawks also lead the NE10 with 9.9 three-point baskets made per game.
  • Tention is averaging 38:17 minutes played per game this season, ranking second in NCAA Division II, while Arbuckle is 12th nationally with 37:06 per tilt.
  • Becker and McGlashan rank sixth and eighth, respectively, in the NE10 with 7.6 and 6.9 rebounds per game. Becker's 5.83 defensive rebounds per game is fourth in the league and McGlashan is cleaning the offensive glass at a 2.13/game rate.
  • Keith Dickson, in his 36th season leading the Saint Anselm program, owns a career record of 698-359 (.660).

SCOUTING ASSUMPTION

  • The Greyhounds lead the NE10 in three-point baskets attempted per game (26.2) and check in with the league's third-best make rate (9.3/game). Assumption rarely gets to the line, ranking 12th in the conference in both free throw attempts (12.2) and free throw make's per game (8.7).
  • Isiah Gaiter leads the NE10 in field goals (150) as his 49.5% field goal percentage is fifth among league student-athletes. He also ranks fourth with 7.9 rebounds per game and his 15.3 points per game is the eighth-finest figure in the league.
  • Cooper Creek has posted 1.13 blocks per game, the sixth-best rate in the NE10, and his 2.35 treys per contest is ninth in the conference. Kani Glover is playing 34:56 minutes per game for Assumption, ranking in the top-five among NE10 performers.
  • When playing at home this season, Assumption enjoys a 7-3 overall record against a 5-9 mark when competing away from Worcester.

SCOUTING SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Michael's leads the NE10 in free throws made per game (12.7) and is second in free throw percentage (76.6%), steals per game (7.9) and three-point field goal attempts per game (26.1). The team also performs admirably on defense with a 41.8% opposing field goal percentage.
  • Jacob Duniver ranks in the top-15 in the NE10 with 6.4 rebounds per game. He cleans the defensive glass at a rate of 5.6 per game, the fifth-best in the conference. Dario Milojevic also helps out defensively, ranking ninth in the conference in blocks (24) and blocks per game (0.96).
  • Romar Reid is one of four student-athletes on the team that average double-digit points per game figures – all four are within 0.3 of each other, led by Reid's 10.3 points per game. Reid has made a team-leading 67 free throws.
  • CJ Crews has a team-best 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio, handing out 42 assists across 24 games.

ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION

  • Saint Anselm and Assumption will meet for the 130th time in team history, by far the most against any opponent in team history. The Hawks have posted a 72-57 (.558) overall record since the first tilt on Jan. 24, 1936.
  • Saint Anselm has won 17 of the last 20 games against the Greyhounds since Feb. 26, 2011 when the teams met in the NE10 postseason. The three losses by the Hawks have come by a combined 12 points via three single-digit point differentials.
  • Saint Anselm, who led by as many as 20 points with just 90 seconds left in the game earlier this season against Assumption, eased its way to a 84-72 win on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

ALL-TIME vs. SAINT MICHAEL'S

  • Saint Anselm is 72-54 (.571) in the all-time series against Saint Michael's that dates back to Dec. 14, 1939.
  • The Hawks have won 23 of the last 26 meetings and have dropped only two of those three losses in regulation. Earlier this season, the Hawks locked down a 69-56 win in Colchester, Vt. on Saturday, Dec. 31.
  • At home against Saint Michael's, the Hawks have won 18 of the last 19 games.
  • Under Dickson, Saint Anselm has a 50-21 (.704) record against the Purple Knights.
