Women's basketball saddled with 79-60 loss at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team posted a 79-60 loss at Franklin Pierce University on Saturday.

Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, Conn.) had 14 points at halftime, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds to her credit. Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) scored 12 points and posted six rebounds along with three steals.

Seniors Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) and McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Harmony Marquez (Rutherford, N.J.) added six points in 10 minutes off the bench.

Trailing by an 18-16 score after the first 10 minutes, Franklin Pierce used three 21-plus point quarters to capture a 58-44 advantage through three and never looked back. The Ravens built a game-high lead of 22 late in the fourth quarter.

Down 14-10 late in the first quarter, the Hawks pulled away with eight consecutive points from Ouellette. The lead for Saint Anselm later grew to 27-20, thanks to a 9-4 start to the second quarter for the Hawks.

Franklin Pierce had a strong second quarter, finishing the stanza on a 17-to-5 scoring run after shooting six-for-eight from the floor. Offensively, the Hawks were just two for their final seven shots and came into the second half of play down 37-32.

The hosts pulled away in the third quarter with a pair of six-point scoring runs that opened the game up to a nine-point lead, 51-42, with 2:56 left. At one point in the third, Franklin Pierce had scored 21 of the game's 29 points, making seven of its nine shots, and taking advantage of seven Hawks miscues.

Franklin Pierce shot 55.4% from the floor in the game, limiting the Hawks to just a 37.1% rate. The hosts, led by 26 points from Ines Gimenez Monserrat, were over 60% from the field in the final 20 minutes alone.

Saint Anselm hits the road Wednesday, Feb. 15 for a 5:30 p.m. showdown at Assumption.
