Score: Saint Anselm 109, Daemen 112
Records: Saint Anselm 4-7; Daemen 10-4
Location: Manchester, N.H. (Stoutenburgh Gymnasium)
Date: Sunday, December 31, 2023
Attendance: 289

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm fell behind early with Daemen playing at a high pace at both ends of the floor. The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead, but fifth-year Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) scored seven of his team's first 10 points to make it a 12-10 deficit.
  • Junior Jack Reardon (Munster, Ind.) checked in off the bench and knocked down his first three pointer of the game at the 11:29 mark to make it a 21-18 Daemen advantage.
  • After five quick points from Daemen's Dylan Fasoyiro to increase his team's lead to six points, Saint Anselm responded with a 16-2 scoring stretch to take the lead, 36-28. Made threes by senior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) aided the Hawks during that run.
  • A well-balanced offense with four different scorers in the final four minutes helped Saint Anselm close out the first half with a 44-38 lead.
  • Saint Anselm increased its lead to double figures early in the second following mid-range jumpers on consecutive possessions by Arbuckle and Morissette. Morissette would then set up junior Keith Robinson (Phillip Island, Australia) with an easy pass for a layup at the rim and Arbuckle followed that up with another made triple as the Hawks led, 55-43, at the 16:11 mark of the second half.
  • Daemen quickly countered with a 9-0 run of their own thanks to four points from Nick MacDonald and a made three pointer by Andrew Mason to make it a one possession game at 55-52. With around 12 minutes remaining, Zach Philipkoski and MacDonald drilled threes for the Wildcats to take a three-point lead and force a Hawks timeout.
  • Morissette provided the answer for Saint Anselm by getting to hoop and the harm. His free throw tied the score at 61 apiece. Two possessions later, Morissette knocked down a mid-range jump shot in the corner and was fouled in the act of shooting. The sophomore converted again at the line to help the Hawks regain a 66-63 lead.
  • With five minutes to play and Daemen ahead by two points, junior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) converted on a three-point play to put Saint Anselm back in front, 77-76. Morissette cashed in on another and-one opportunity as the Hawks led, 83-78, with 2:47 to go.
  • With five seconds left in regulation, Daemen's Justin Glover, who provided a huge spark off the bench all game long for the Wildcats, knocked down a three to tie the game at 84-84 and forced the game into overtime.
  • Both teams traded points in the first extra period. The Wildcats obtained a 97-95 edge after a layup from Justin Hemphill. Morissette answered with a jumper in the paint at the other end to tie the score and force a second overtime.
  • Daemen jumped out to a two possession lead with the score at 109-105 and 1:46 remaining following a floater by Glover. Hemphill kept their lead at four with another made layup with just over a minute to play.
  • With 19 seconds left, Arbuckle knocked down a pair at the free throw line to make it a 112-109 Wildcats lead. Senior Jadon Archer (Enfield, Conn.) stole the ball away from Daemen on the inbounds play and quickly got the ball to Arbuckle. The fifth-year had two opportunities to tie the game from long distance after an offensive rebound, but neither would fall as the Wildcats escaped with the win.
