HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) poured in the first four points of the game for Saint Anselm, although Saint Michael's jumped out to an early 11-6 lead courtesy of four points by Darrel Yepdo and a three-pointer by Jhmayl Fricas. Junior Keith Robinson (Phillip Island, Australia) responded with four consecutive points for the Hawks to cut the deficit to one point, but a triple in transition from Yepdo allowed the Purple Knights to extend their lead to 14-10 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
- Robinson connected on a mid-range jumper at the 10:32 mark to knot the score up at 16 apiece. Saint Anselm earned their first lead of the ball game a minute later with the second basket of the game from fifth-year Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.). A three-point basket by sophomore Josh Morissette (Exteter, N.H.)Â with eight and a half minutes remaining in the half put the Hawks ahead, 22-16.
- At the 5:29 mark in the first, Yepdo helped the Purple Knights regain the lead, 26-24, after finishing a layup at the rim while being fouled. Yepdo converted the three-point play at the free throw line. Two three-point field goals on consecutive possessions, one from Yepdo and the other by Romar Reid, allowed Saint Michael's to pull back ahead by six points.
- Robinson once again provided the answer for Saint Anselm, connecting on a jumper in the paint and a three-ball on back-to-back possessions as the Hawks regained control with a 32-31 advantage.
- Another triple from Morissette and an and-one layup by junior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) gave Saint Anselm a 38-36 lead at halftime.
- A back-and-forth start of the second half resulted in the game being deadlocked at 61-61 with just under nine minutes remaining in the game. McCarthy paced the Hawks during that 11-minute stretch with seven points, while Morissette and Robinson added five apiece. Yepdo and Romar carried the Purple Knights during that time frame, combining for 17 of their 25 points.
- After a made layup by Becker with 7:40 remaining and a two-point Hawks lead, the Purple Knights began a 17-2 scoring run to finish the game. A balanced scoring attack combined with a ferocious defense helped Saint Michael's concede just two points in the final seven minutes, forcing Saint Anselm to shoot just 1-18 Â from the field.
- Saint Michael's eventually pulled away and started their conference season with a 78-65 victory.
