Martin tallies overtime game-winner to help Women's Ice Hockey down Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. – Senior Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) scored the game-winner just 27 seconds into overtime to lift the Saint Anselm College women's hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Franklin Pierce University at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Franklin Pierce scored the game's first goal at the 16:36 mark of the game's opening period, as Emilie Prive found the back of the net, giving the host Ravens the early edge.
  • The second period would end scoreless, with the Ravens putting 14 shots on net and the Hawks seven, but freshman goaltender Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.) held fast, keeping the game within striking distance.
  • In the third, the Hawks offense tallied 13 shots on target, and with 14:15 gone by in the final frame, junior Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season off an assist from senior captain Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.), knotting the score at 1-1.
  • A major penalty by the Ravens with just 40 seconds remaining in the game set the Hawks up for a 4-on-3 advantage in the game's extra stanza. Martin took full advantage, sending a one-timer home off a pass from senior Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.), giving the Hawks their seventh win of the year.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm, aided by an 18-9 edge in shots in the game's opening period, outshot the Ravens 39-33 on the evening.
  • The Hawks overcame surrendering five power play opportunities on the evening. Saint Anselm finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
  • Stagman improved her record to 5-7-1 on the year with a 32-save performance in net.
  • The win pushes Saint Anselm's all-time series lead against the Ravens to 26-9-2.
