Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season with 3-1 in Over SCSU

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Behind 14 kills from freshman Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and 13 from senior Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.), the regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College volleyball team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 6-1 lead before the host Owls battled their way back to go in front 9-7 early in the first. The Owls extended their lead to 19-14 down the stretch and closed out the first set for their only victory on the afternoon, 25-16.
  • Trailing 17-15 midway through the second, Saint Anselm went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-17 lead and held on from there to even the match at 1-1.
  • With an 18-15 lead in the third, the Hawks again used a 6-0 run to pull away for the 25-16 win.
  • The fourth set was all Hawks from the start, as Saint Anselm built a 6-0 edge out of the gate. The Owls battled back to tie the game at 9-9 before Saint Anselm used an 8-3 run to pull in front once again, 17-12. The Hawks were able to keep the Owls at bay down the stretch, sealing the 25-19 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Cali.) recorded 30 assists on the afternoon to go along with nine digs. Fifth year Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) had a team-high 19 digs and matched Macalaguim for the team lead with three service aces. Belmontez now sits in second place in program history in career digs with 1,679, trailing just Karen Lyons '05 by just 30 digs.
  • The Hawks hit .204 as a team on the afternoon while holding the Owls to .168.
  • Carissa Michel led the Owls with a team-best 14 kills.
  • The win moves the Hawks to within one of evening the all-time series, currently trailing 14-15. The win avenges a 3-0 loss to the Owls this season on Sept. 8.
