HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both sides earned quality opportunities despite a scoreless first half of play. SNHU's Alyssa Anderson registered the first three shots on goal for the Penmen, all of which were saved by Hawks freshman goalkeeper Maggie Warner (Saugus, Mass.).
- Senior captain Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.) put the first Saint Anselm shot on target 28 minutes into the match, but SNHU goalkeeper Claudia Keith made the comfortable save.
- The Penmen had two goals called back for offside in the opening half hour, while the Hawks also had a goal taken off the board due to a similar offside whistle. SNHU's Anne Sikkema took the last shot of the half, but Warner hauled it in for her fourth save of the game.Â
- The Penmen started the second half on the attacking front, finding the back of the net in the opening six minutes of the half. Carly Schofield drove down the right flank and got past her defender before cutting along the end line. She found her teammate, Victoria Roulston, whose one-touch finish beat Warner and put SNHU ahead, 1-0.
- Less than two minutes later, Schofield got back to work for the Penmen, intercepting a Hawks pass just outside the box and dribbled it all the way to goal before sliding home a shot into the lower left corner to double SNHU's lead.
- In the 73rd minute, Warner made a spectacular save on another shot from Anderson, this time leaping to deflect a long distance effort over the bar. Warner also denied Schofield in the 84th minute on a breakaway chance.
- Saint Anselm had trouble getting past the Penmen back line and would fail to find a goal, eventually falling by a final score of 2-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- SNHU outshot Saint Anselm 13-9Â in the game, while also holding a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
