Women's Ice Hockey Skates to 4-2 Win Over Stonehill College

MANCHESTER, N.H.  – Senior Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) scored what would be the game-winning goal in the second period, and senior Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) added the empty-netter with under a minute remaining to give the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team a 4-2 victory over Stonehill College in NEWHA action from the Sullivan Arena on Friday.

  • Saint Anselm will faceoff against Stonehill again on Saturday, Oct. 21 from Bridgewater, Massachusetts with a 1:00 p.m. puck drop.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks fired the opening four shots of the game forcing two early saves from Skyhawks goalie Hanna Zukow. In the third minute of the first period, freshman goalie Courtney Stagman (Andover, Minn.) registered her first saves of the night. At the 4:47 mark, junior Gracee Donovan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) rifled a shot into the back of the net to give the Hawks the quick 1-0 advantage over the Skyhawks.
  • Stonehill took control offensively after going down a goal ripping eight shots in the span of five minutes. Not too long after, the Skyhawks would tie the game at 1-1 thanks to a score by Gracie Sacca at the 10:02 mark. About three minutes later, Stonehill would take advantage of a power play opportunity as Pusle Dyring-Andersen drilled a shot past Stagman to give the Skyhawks the 2-1 lead. With under three minutes remaining in the period, senior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) buried a wrist shot to even the score at 2-2 heaidng into the seocnd period. 
  • Saint Anselm wasted no time on the attack recording four early shots with Zukow making three saves and Dyring-Andersen posting a block. Stagman came up big for the Hawks making three consecutive saves to keep the score level at 2-2. It wasn't until the 15th minute of the second period that Saint Anselm finally broke through the scoresheet again with senior Savannag Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) notching her seocnd goal of the season to put the Hawks back up 3-2.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Stonhill 13-6 in the first 11 minutes of the third period with Zukow posting nine saves. Senior Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) sealed the victory for the Hawks after finding the back of the net in the final minute of the game on an empty Skyhawks net, defeating Stonehill by a final score of 4-2. 


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Four different Hawks found the back of the net including the first goal of the season for Donovan. McCaffery ended the night with a goal and an assist for two-points while Popick notched her seocnd score and Tulchinsky her third of the year in the victory. 
  • Junior Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.), sophomore Brooklyn Schneiderhan (Helena, Mont.), and freshman Julianna Herman each registered an assist a piece for Saint Anselm. 
  • Stagman picked up her first collegiate win in net for the Hawks after posting 29 saves and allowing just two goals. 
  • This marked the sixth-ever meeting between these programs with Saint Anselm now holding a 5-1 lead in the all-time series against Stonehill.
