HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a relatively quiet first half of offense for both sides, Saint Anselm took advantage of home field and had control of more possession than Saint Michael's. However, neither side registered a shot in the first 15 minutes of action.
- In the 16th minute, the Purple Knights earned a corner kick that Mikel Penin curled in with his left foot. The cross found his teammate, Nino Scolieri, at the back post, but his header went off the left post and was cleared away by the Hawks defense.
- Saint Anselm registered their first shot of the game just over a minute later when junior James Poschmann (Bedford, N.H.) put forth an effort from outside the box that missed the net wide left.
- The Hawks nearly opened the scoring in the 24th minute after junior Samuel Assantha (Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo) got to work down the left wing and perfectly placed a pass behind the Purple Knights back line. His ball reached senior Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) at the back post, but his one touch shot just missed wide right.
- Neither side registered a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes as both sides went into halftime scoreless.
- In the second half, the Purple Knights started to pick up some momentum, gaining possession and creating chances in the attacking third. In the 60th minute, Amos Schramm was taken down in the penalty box and Saint Michael's was awarded a penalty kick. Schramm stepped up to take the shot, but was denied by sophomore goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.), who dove to his left and parried the ball out of play.
- The save gave a much needed source of energy to Saint Anselm, who got back on the front foot from that point on. In the 64th minute, Assantha got past two Saint Michael's defenders on the left wing and dribbled into the box. His cross was deflected but found its way to junior Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.) for a great chance in front of goal, but his close-range shot missed to the left.
- In the 70th minute, Leader drew a free kick just outside the Saint Michael's penalty area. Provenzano stepped up to curl in a service for Saint Anselm, and his ball found a cutting Dresens, who flicked a header from the top of the six-yard box into the lower left corner to put the Hawks ahead, 1-0.
- The Purple Knights would not do too much to trouble Hood and the Hawks defense in the final minutes as Saint Anselm held on for the 1-0 victory, their first in six games. The defeat is the first for Saint Michael's on the road in NE10 play this season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
