EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team fell in overtime to New England Women's Hockey Association foe, Long Island University, by a 2-1 score on Saturday.
The Hawks drop to 11-12-2 overall and 10-4-2 in league contests while the Sharks improve to 12-10-2 on their season and take over sole possession of first place in the NEWHA standings at 11-1-2. Saint Anselm will host nationally-ranked Yale University on Tuesday, Jan. 10 in its final non-league game of the season.
In the three-on-three overtime period, LIU managed to get a strong breakout to
Carrigan Umpherville who was behind the Hawks defense in the neutral zone. She would go in on a breakaway but senior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) made the save to preserve a 1-1 score. However, the Hawks were penalized on the play which gave the Sharks a penalty shot at 3:26 of overtime. Umpherville managed to convert on the penalty shot to give the hosts a 2-1 win.
Earlier in the contest, freshman
Brooklyn Pancoast (Helena, Mont.) opened the scoring at 13:38 of the first period. Pancoast won a puck battle in the defensive zone and with a chip off the right board was able to go to goal on a breakaway. The freshman made a strong move back to the forehand and buried her fifth goal of the season through the five-hole of Sharks netminder
Tindra Holm.
Umpherville knotted the score at one at 1:40 of the second period. Umpherville collected a cross-ice pass from
Ashley Morrow in a three-on-two and snapped a shot into the left side of the goal.
The Hawks had a strong scoring chance in the overtime period as sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) and junior
Savannah Popick (South Windsor, Conn.) were in a two-on-one. The duo was unable to record a shot on target due to a pass breakup by a LIU defender but Popick nearly won the contest with a turnaround shot that went just wide of the right post.
Kelley turned aside double-digit shots on goal in all three regulation periods including all 17 she faced in the third period. The senior closed the contest with 44 saves compared to 25 for Holm.
LIU held a 46-26 edge in shots on goal and held a slight 29-28 advantage in faceoff wins. Graduate student
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) posted 12 and 10 wins each from the faceoff dots respectively. Neither side capitalized on their power play chances as the Hawks were scoreless in their two opportunities while the Sharks were scoreless on their one.
