MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team dropped its regular season non-conference finale to nationally-ranked Yale University by a 6-0 score on Tuesday.
The Hawks fall to 11-13-2 on the season while the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 2 in the most recent USCHO.com National Poll and No. 5 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll, move to 15-1-1 on their 2022-23 campaign. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Jan. 20 in the first leg of a home-and-home series against Stonehill College.
After a nearly scoreless opening frame,
Claire Dalton netted the game's opening goal for Yale with just 24 seconds left in the period. Dalton was the recipient of a cross-crease pass from
Elle Hartje on the power play, needing just 21 seconds with the extra skater to crack the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs netted their second goal at 8:10 of the second period as
Vita Poniatovskaia snapped a shot into the upper half of the goal, capping a two-on-one for the visitors.
Just 4:48 later, Yale added their second goal of the period to take a 3-0 lead as
Charlotte Welch made a strong move to the backhand to beat senior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.).
The Hawks had a strong chance to find the twine in the closing minutes of the second period as junior
Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) fired a shot from the top of the slot which was turned aside by
Mia Wendell. Sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) collected the rebound and put another shot on goal but Wendell made the save on that chance as well.
Yale added a power play goal at 9:22 of the third period before tacking on two more in the final five minutes of play to push the score to 6-0.
The Bulldogs held a 49-12 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks were led by Turner who put three shots on target. Saint Anselm blocked 23 Yale shots with senior
Kenadie Cooper (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) leading the squad with five blocks. The Bulldogs power play found the back of the goal twice in four power play chances while the Hawks were scoreless in their two opportunities.
Kelley turned aside 43 shots on goal for Saint Anselm. The senior netminder has eclipsed the 800-save mark on the season and has now made 40 or more saves in three of the last four games.
