MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team dropped its non-conference battle with Worcester State University by a 6-0 score on Saturday.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 10-6-1 on the season and will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 13 when they battle in-state foe Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference play from Sullivan Arena. The Lancers improve to 6-7-0 with Saturday's result.
Worcester State jumped on the scoreboard first at the 5:00 mark of the first period. Sophomore netminder
Trevor Lally (Arlington, Mass.) turned away an initial shot attempt but
Martin Dlougolinsky was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound chance.
Just 3:37 later,
Mikey Wilson collected a pass at the top of the slot and fired a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the goal to extend the Lancers lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Max Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) had the best scoring chance for the Hawks to find the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes. Junior
Alec Grace (Laguna Hills, Calif.) sent a feed to the slot for Burum who fired a one-time shot on Worcester State goaltender
Jakub Kubik but he was able to make the save.
The Lancers added two more goals in the second period.
Anders Grongstad was the beneficiary of a Hawks turnover in their defensive end at 4:24 before
Brendan Ronan found the twine in the final minute of the second frame which pushed the visitors lead to 4-0.
The Hawks held a 11-10 edge in shots on goal in the third period but Worcester State managed to net another pair of goals in the final period. Senior
Matt Hayes (Salem, N.H.) fired a team-high three shots in the final 20 minutes of play.
Lally, who was making his second start of the season, posted 19 saves before freshman
Tucker Hanson (Boxford, Mass.) came on in relief in the third period. Hanson made six saves in his collegiate debut. The Hawks goaltenders combined for 25 saves while Kubik posted a 22-save shutout in the Worcester State goal.
The Lancers put double-digit shots on goal in each period and held a 31-22 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks were credited with five blocks with senior
Jack Murphy (Marshfield, Mass.) leading the roster with two in the contest. Hayes won a game-high eight faceoffs in the tilt.
