EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie at Long Island University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play on Friday.
The Hawks move to 11-11-2 on the season with a 10-3-2 mark in NEWHA contests while the Sharks go to 11-10-2 overall and 10-1-2 in league battles. The teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday, Jan. 7 from East Meadow, N.Y. with a 2 p.m. opening puck drop.
Graduate student
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.), who skated in her program-record 117th career game for the Hawks, netted a pair of third-period goals and added an assist to lead the Saint Anselm offense with three points. Junior
Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) each found the twine and recorded a helper for two points in the tilt.
With the Hawks trailing by a 4-2 margin, Golini would fire a wrist shot into the upper left of the goal to cut the Saint Anselm deficit to one at the 5:44 mark of the third period.
Golini added her second tally of the contest at 9:07 of the final regulation period as she buried a feed from junior
Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.), on the power play, which knotted the score at four.
The Hawks had a great chance to grab an overtime winner as a loose puck found its way to the front of the Sharks goal but no Saint Anselm student-athlete managed to get a clean shot away. Long Island held a 10-4 edge in shot attempts in the five-minute extra frame.
Earlier in the contest, Turner opened the scoring with a power play goal at 4:34 of the opening period. Turner found herself alone in front of the Long Island goal following a cross-crease pass from Golini.
The Hawks doubled the lead just 29 seconds later as Tulchinsky one-timed a pass from classmate
Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.). Tulchinsky's shot beat Sharks netminder
Tindra Holm on the left side of the goal to push the score to 2-0.
Long Island would cut into the Hawks advantage with a power play goal at 12:01.
Megan Bouveur collected a pass at the point and after surveying, she would drive to the top of the slot and fire a wrist shot that snuck just inside the right post.
The Sharks knotted the score at two at 5:12 of the second period with their second power play tally of the contest.
Jeannie Wallner redirected a cross-ice dish from Bouveur, beating senior goaltender
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.).
A strong passing play by Long Island set up the second goal of the tilt for Bouveur. Bouveur found herself alone in front of the Saint Anselm goal and managed to deflect a pass from
Ashley Morrow to give the hosts a 3-2 lead at 8:31 of the middle frame.
Long Island put their fourth on the scoreboard at 17:51 of the second stanza as
Abby Latorella sent a shot toward the goal from the right corner with the puck managing to find its way into the back of the net.
Both teams netted two goals on the power play in the tilt as the Hawks were two-for-six while the Sharks were two-for-two. Long Island held a 34-26 advantage in shots on goal but Saint Anselm won 35 of 67 draws, led by 20 from Golini.
Kelley stopped 30 shots on target in the Hawks goal compared to 22 for Holm.
