MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team recorded a 65-57 loss on Wednesday to nationally-ranked Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Saint Anselm drops to 5-8 overall on the season and to 2-7 against the NE10. Assumption (12-1, 6-1 NE10) is ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II by the Division II Sports Information Directors of America and 25th nationally by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association.
Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) led Saint Anselm with 17 points and nine rebounds, throwing up two blocks in the loss. Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) scored 11 points with five assists, four rebounds and a takeaway. Senior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) tallied 10 points for the Hawks.
A hot shooting start for Assumption set the tone as the visitors made each of their first six shots, including three triples from one of the national leaders in three-point percentage, Molly Stokes. Ahead by a 15-4 margin at that point, the Greyhounds held on to the comfortable victory thanks to a 10-for-13 (76.9%) first quarter.
Saint Anselm attempted several rallies in the third and fourth quarters, but could come no closer than six points in that timeframe.
In the fourth quarter, down by 18, the Hawks fired off a 12-1 scoring spurt that trimmed the Assumption lead to just seven points, 59-52. Forced to foul late, the Greyhounds made just enough free throws to keep the margin of victory at eight.
Assumption shot 44.4% from the floor while the hosts converted just 36.5% of its attempts from the field. The Hawks were whistled for 22 fouls while Assumption was called for just 15 infractions.
Saint Anselm hosts New Haven on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1:30 p.m. in Northeast-10 play.
