Saint Anselm (9-3, 6-1 NE10), receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' poll, welcomes Assumption (5-7, 1-5 NE10) to campus on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks then play host to New Haven (8-3, 6-1 NE10 as of Jan. 4) on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3:30 p.m.
The Hawks are enjoying their longest winning streak since the 2019-20 campaign, having rebounded from a 2-3 start to win seven games in a row. Last time out, Saint Anselm locked down a 69-56 victory at Saint Michael's on Saturday, Dec. 31 before the New Year.
Assumption has lost five of its first six games in NE10 play – its one victory was against Saint Michael's by a one-point margin on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Greyhounds have had difficulty in close games, owning a 3-4 record in games decided by one or two possessions.
New Haven, who will play at Georgian Court in non-conference action on Wednesday, hits the road for its first away NE10 game since Wednesday, Nov. 30. The team's lone defeat this season was at Saint Michael's in the season-opener, 75-74.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
- Last time out at Saint Michael's, the Hawks posted 22 assists, giving the team at least 21 assists in back-to-back games. Saint Anselm has posted double-digit assist totals in all but three games this season.
- Saint Anselm also equaled a season-high with nine steals, paced by a career-high total of four takeaways from junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.). He ranks 10th in the NE10 with 17 takeaways this season.
- Across its seven-game winning streak, the Hawks have all five starters averaging at least 10 points per game. Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) and Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) are leading the way with 17.3 and 15.0 points per game, respectively, in that span.
- In the last seven games, Becker is averaging nearly a double-double with 10.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in that time frame.
- Collectively during the winning streak, the Hawks are also enjoying a +7.9 rebounding margin, a +11 scoring margin and are shooting 51.1% from the floor (212-for-415) and 43.6% from distance (65-for-149).
- The Hawks commit just 13.6 fouls per game, ranking 14th in NCAA Division II, and the team's 18.4 free throw attempts per game ranks second in the league. The Hawks trail only Bentley (85.7) for the NE10 lead in scoring offense (76.3).
- Saint Anselm is 329-28 (.922) all-time when scoring 90 or more points in a game – the Hawks are a perfect 3-0 this season when doing so.
- Head Coach Keith Dickson has compiled a 690-356 (.660) record at Saint Anselm in 36 seasons since his promotion to Head Coach in 1986. Among active NCAA Division II coaches, Dickson ranks fifth in victories.
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
- Last time out, the Greyhounds played Southern New Hampshire to a 31-31 deadlock at halftime. The host Penmen pulled away with 53 second-half points on the way to a convincing 84-58 victory on New Year's Eve.
- Assumption leads the NE10 in three-point field goal attempts per game, averaging 27.1 shots from distance. The team's 36.0% percentage from beyond the arc is third in the NE10 behind Bentley (40.5%) and Saint Anselm (38.9%).
- Opponents are shooting 39.8% from distance against the Greyhounds, the highest three-point field goal defense in the NE10. The team's overall field goal percentage of 41.7% is the second-lowest in the league.
- Isiah Gaiter is ranked fourth in the NE10 with 7.6 rebounds per game and is just nine shy of 100 caroms for the season (91). Cooper Creek is also chipping in with a respectable 6.3 rebounds per contest.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
- After losing its first NE10 game of the season to open the year, the Chargers have won six league games in a row, including a 69-50 home victory over Le Moyne on Saturday, Dec. 31. Ahead by seven at the break, the Chargers held Le Moyne to just 20 points in the game's final 20 minutes for the win.
- New Haven entered the week with just 10.9 fouls whistled per game, leading all of NCAA Division II. The team is also ranked fifth in the nation with 31 defensive rebounds per game as the team's +4.7 rebound margin is fourth in the NE10.
- Majur Majak is second nationally with 3.18 blocks per game and his 35 rejections is fourth in the country. He also leads the NE10 in double-doubles (four), rebounds (113), rebounds per game (10.3) and defensive rebounds per game (nine).
- Senior Ty Perry, a transfer from Buffalo (NCAA Division I), leads the team with 16.1 points per game, ranking fourth in the NE10, with Quashawn Lane, a graduate student, not far behind with 14.4 points per tilt – Lane ranks ninth in the NE10 in point scoring, shooting a team-best 56.8% from the floor.
ALL-TIME vs. ASSUMPTION, NEW HAVEN
- Saint Anselm and Assumption will meet for the 129th time in team history, by far the most against any opponent in team history. The Hawks have posted a 71-57 overall record since the first tilt on Jan. 24, 1936.
- Saint Anselm has won 16 of the last 19 games against the Greyhounds since Feb. 26, 2011 when the teams met in the NE10 postseason. The three losses by the Hawks have come by a combined 12 points via three single-digit point differentials.
- Saturday's meeting marks the 31st meeting in the all-time series with New Haven – the Hawks enjoy a 20-10 record against the Chargers.
- Saint Anselm and New Haven have met regularly in NCAA and NE10 postseason play. The Chargers most recently downed the Hawks, 78-70, in the Quarterfinals round of last season's NCAA Division II East Region Championship.
- The Hawks did secure a thrilling 81-79 overtime victory over New Haven in the NE10 Quarterfinals just two weeks prior. Prior to that, Saint Anselm was a 65-63 overtime winner in the 2020 NE10 Championship on Mar. 7, 2020.
