Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 22 men's basketball holds on for 70-68 victory at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team secured a 70-68 victory on the road against Adelphi University on Saturday in Northeast-10 Conference play.

The Hawks, receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Poll, improve to 15-5 on the season and to 10-3 versus the NE10. Saint Anselm, who led by as many as 18 points in the two-point victory, is also ranked 22nd in NCAA Division II, according to the D2SIDA National Media Poll.

Adelphi (9-10, 6-8 NE10) led for just 89 seconds in the game, but had plenty of opportunities to take the lead late. The Hawks scored their final point of regulation time with 4:47 to go, establishing a 70-60 lead, but the Panthers produced the game's final eight points while holding the visitors without a made basket or free throw.

The Panthers had two layups in the final seconds of regulation, but neither attempt found the bottom of the net. Saint Anselm maintained a 44-34 lead at halftime and led by as many as 18 points during the first half, providing a much-needed cushion that proved valuable in the waning seconds of the contest.

Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) produced his third double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and adding 12 rebounds in the win. Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) tallied 19 points, matching McGlashan with four treys, and handed out three assists, and Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) cashed in with 14 points.

Ahead by a slim 18-15 margin near the midway point of the first half, Saint Anselm scored 13 of the next 15 points and ultimately rattled off a 21-6 scoring run that yielded its game-high lead of 18 points. Four Hawks produced at least four points in that stretch as the team missed just one field goal on nine opportunities while not committing a turnover.

Adelphi made its biggest move of the game in the second half, scoring 20 of the game's 27 points to shrink the Saint Anselm lead to just three points, 59-56, with 9:15 left. The Hawks shot 50% in that span offensively, but committed six turnovers in just under eight minutes of action.

Saint Anselm sent home its final 11 points of the game immediately after the Adelphi threat, building its 70-60 lead with 4:47 to go. McGlashan had nine of his team's 11 points, coming up clutch as every one of his points counted in the end as Saint Anselm was 0-for-3 in the final 2:30 and committed a turnover.

Adelphi held the narrow edge in field goal percentage (44.8%-to-44.4%) while Saint Anselm possessed a 32-to-31 advantage in rebounds. Four second-half triples for the Hawks helped the team to the win, as did a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.

Keith Dickson, in his 36th season leading the Saint Anselm program, improves to 696-358 (.660) in his career at the helm.

Saint Anselm hosts Pace this Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in NE10 action.
