MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team dropped its New England Women's Hockey Alliance game to Stonehill College by an 8-3 score on Saturday.
The Hawks fall to 12-14-2 on the season with an 11-5-2 record in NEWHA play while the Skyhawks improve to 13-13-1 overall and 10-8-0 in league contests. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, Jan. 27 when they host Franklin Pierce in the first game of a home-and-home series with the Ravens.
Sophomore
Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) netted one goal and added an assist for two points while graduate student
Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior
Gracie Bruno (Needham, Mass.) netted one goal each. Bruno's tally in the second period marked the first goal and point of her collegiate career.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 13:30 of the first period when
Alexis Petford sent a wrist shot into the upper left of the goal.
Stonehill doubled its lead just 3:16 later with a shorthanded goal from
Katie Sonntag. Sonntag broke up a passing play and drove to goal on a breakaway, beating senior
Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Skyhawks tallied a pair of power play goals at 2:05 and 3:46 of the second period coming from
Lily Geist and Petford to take a 4-0 lead.
Geist would extend the Skyhawks lead to five with her second of the game at the team's third power play goal of the game at 11:06 of the second period.
Bruno would get the Hawks on the scoreboard at 16:08 as she cleaned up a rebound following a shot from sophomore
Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.). Ressler collected a loose puck and drove the length of the ice to put a shot on the Skyhawks netminder to set up Bruno with the scoring chance.
Just 46 seconds later, Golini finished off a two-on-one with Turner to cut the deficit to three at 5-2, headed to the third period.
Petford and
Maddison Achtyl netted a goal each in the opening minutes of the third period before Turner found the back of the goal on a shorthanded breakaway.
Lucie Turcotte would cap the scoring in the contest at 17:28 of the third.
Stonehill held a 38-33 edge in shots on goal and was three-for-four on the power play. Saint Anselm was scoreless in its five power play chances. The Hawks held a 35-31 advantage in faceoff wins and were led by Golini who was 17-10 from the dots. Senior
Kenadie Cooper (San Tan Valley, Ariz.) blocked a game-high five shots in front of the Hawks goal.
Kelley turned aside 30 shots on goal for Saint Anselm while
Hanna Zukow stopped 30 shots in the net for Stonehill.
