PREVIEW: Women's basketball gets back to NE10 play versus SNHU, SCSU

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team returns to Northeast-10 Conference play at crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday, Jan. 18 before hosting Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Hawks concluded their non-conference slate with a 68-46 win over Felician University on Jan. 12, improving to 7-9 on the season. Saint Anselm enters the second half of the conference schedule with a 3-7 mark in NE10 play. Following the pair of games this week, the Hawks will play a pair of road games at Bentley on Wednesday, Jan. 25 and at Adelphi on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The Penmen, who are receiving votes in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Poll, are 12-3 on the season and 8-2 in league games after suffering a 67-49 loss to Le Moyne which snapped a six-game win streak. Southern New Hampshire will host the Owls on Tuesday, Jan. 24 in their next contest.

The Owls dropped a conference battle with New Haven on Jan. 14 which dropped them to 10-5 overall and to 5-4 against NE10 foes. Before making the trip to the Hilltop, Southern Connecticut State hosts Le Moyne on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) led the Hawks with 18 points in the win over the Golden Falcons. Turco grabbed a team-high eight board and dishes four assists in the contest.
  • Freshman Harmony Marquez (Rutherford, N.J.) posted a career-best 13 points at Felician and added seven rebounds, aiding the Hawks to the win.
  • Turco is averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game on 39.7% shooting from the floor. The junior is collecting 5.9 rebounds per game, which are second most on the Hawks roster while leading team with 18 steals on the season. Turco's scoring average is fifth-best in the NE10.
  • Senior Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) is averaging 11.0 points per game which are second most on the Saint Anselm roster. The senior leads the Hawks at 7.3 rebounds per game and has a total of 101 defensive boards through 16 games played in 2022-23. Robles is tied with Turco for the team lead at an average of 1.1 steals per game. The senior is also tied for fifth in the conference with 1.0 blocks per game.
  • Sophomore Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) holds the top field goal percentage for the team and is fifth in the conference, sitting at 47.8%. Hoyt is averaging 9.3 points per game this season.
  • Senior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) is averaging 2.6 assists per game this season which is good for second on the team.
  • Saint Anselm is averaging 61.1 points per game on the season. The defense is holding opponents to 59.3 points per game, which is the fifth best mark in the NE10.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • The Penmen are also ranked fifth in the most recent D2SIDA Women's Basketball East Region poll.
  • Adriana Timberlake ranks second in the conference with an average of 17.7 points per game. Timberlake is 98-255 (38.4%) from the floor and is 32-112 (28.6%) from beyond on the arc, which are the most shot attempts on the team. Timberlake leads the team with 51 assists, averaging 3.5 per game.
  • Jess Knight ranks second on the team and is sixth in the conference at 16.2 points per game. Knight is converting on her shot attempts at 47.0% which is second highest on the roster. Knight is nearly averaging a double-double as she is pulling down 9.7 rebounds per game. Knight leads the conference with 1.3 blocks per game.
  • Ariana Koivisto is averaging 8.1 points per game and is collecting 6.6 rebounds per game to aid the Penmen. Koivisto is second on the roster with 1.3 steals per game, trailing only Timberlake who is averaging 1.5.
  • Southern New Hampshire is third in the conference at 66.2 points per game on offense. However, the defense is allowing 61.2 which is ninth in the NE10.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • Zoë Amalbert is one of three scorers on the roster in double-digit scoring averages. She is the team leader at 13.0 points per game while Katie Williamson is second at 11.3 and Isabella Santoro sits at 10.6.
  • Williamson is grabbing a team-high 7.3 boards per contest with Santoro in second at 5.6.
  • Amalbert has a total of 73 assists this season, good for an average of 5.0 per game which leads the NE10.
  • Delaney Connors and Ashley Evans are also key contributors for the Owls. Connors has started in all 14 games she has appeared in and is averaging 8.9 points per game while Evans has starts 15 games and is sitting at 5.8 points per contest.
  • Southern Connecticut State is limiting opponents to 54.7 points per game which is the third-lowest mark in the conference. On the offensive side of play, the team is posting 61.9 points per contest which is eighth-best in the NE10.
ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
  • The Hawks and Penmen will be meeting for the 75th time in the all-time series and the second time in 2022-23. Saint Anselm enjoys a 51-23 record against Southern New Hampshire.
  • The Penmen grabbed a 76-75 win over the Hawks in the season-opening game on Nov. 11 which gives Southern New Hampshire a win in three of the last four meetings.
  • Saint Anselm and Southern Connecticut State are meeting for the 30th time on Saturday. The Owls hold a 17-12 record in the series.
  • The programs last met on Feb. 6, 2022 in New Haven, Conn. The Owls posted a 105-69 win in that meeting, snapping a five-game win streak in the series for the Hawks.
