The Hawks host Le Moyne on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. before hitting the road to play Saint Thomas Aquinas, the No. 21 team in NCAA Division II (NABC), on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.
Saint Anselm, who carries a 10-4 record (7-2 NE10) into play on Tuesday, posted a career-high 26 points in Saturday's 72-63 loss to the University of New Haven. The Hawks were receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' poll and saw its eight-game winning streak end.
Le Moyne, a long-time rival of the Hawks, has a 9-7 overall record alongside a 6-2 mark in NE10 play. The Dolphins are fresh off a 83-72 home win over Saint Michael's last Wednesday. Earlier this season, the Dolphins lost just one game in regulation from Saturday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Dec. 17.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, the owners of a 28-5 record last season, are off to another great start by winning 14 of the team's first 16 games this season. Boasting a 9-1 record at home, the team's one defeat on its home court was a 79-77 loss to Pace on Saturday, Dec. 18.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM
- Senior Owen McGlashan (Marlton, N.J.) was 10-for-17 from the floor, pouring home five three-point baskets, and adding a career-high 26 points in the loss to New Haven. Junior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Hawks with nine rebounds and matched senior Miles Tention (Palo Alto, Calif.) with five assists.
- Tention scored 14 points with senior Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.), who joined McGlashan and Tention by playing all 40 minutes, scored 15 points against New Haven. Tention, competing in his 100th career game on Saturday, has played at least 37 minutes in each of the last 11 games for Saint Anselm.
- The Hawks commit just 13.8 fouls per game, ranking 17th in NCAA Division II, and the team's 18.1 free throw attempts per game ranks second in the league. The Hawks rank third in the NE10 lead in scoring offense (75.9).
- Saint Anselm is 329-28 (.922) all-time when scoring 90 or more points in a game – the Hawks are a perfect 3-0 this season when doing so.
- Head Coach Keith Dickson has compiled a 691-357 (.659) record at Saint Anselm in 36 seasons since his promotion to Head Coach in 1986. Among active NCAA Division II coaches, Dickson ranks fifth in victories.
SCOUTING LE MOYNE
- The Dolphins rank ninth in NCAA Division II in blocks per game (5.0) and also lead the NE10 in turnover margin (3.6) and turnovers forced per game (16.75). Le Moyne, however, leads the league in fouls with 17.5 per game.
- Isaiah Elmore and Xavier Wilson rank in the top eight in the NE10 in blocks per game with 1.25 and 1.19, respectively. Between the pair, they have combined for 39 rejections.
- Mike DePersia and Isaiah Salter are three and four in the NE10, respectively, in steals (27, 23).Salter also hits on 2.12 three-point baskets per game.
- Last time out, the Dolphins made 28 out of a possible 39 free throws against Saint Michael's in an 11-point win, 83-72. This season, Le Moyne has been sent to the line over 30 times on three occasions.
SCOUTING SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
- Saint Thomas Aquinas ranks second in all of NCAA Division II in offensive rebounds per game (15.75) and seventh in overall rebounding (42.25). The Spartans also force 18.94 turnovers per game, the seventh-most in the country.
- The Spartans lead the East Coast Conference in virtually every offensive and defensive statistic, including rebounds per game (42.25), scoring offense (82.4) and scoring margin (+12.2). The team's 87.5% winning percentage is 20th in NCAA Division II.
- James Patterson is ranked second in the ECC in point scoring (15.4) and is fifth in the league in rebounds per game (7.3). Patterson has also produced a strong free throw percentage (74.4%), ranking seventh in the conference.
- In the last seven full seasons of competition, Saint Thomas Aquinas has won at least 21 games with the only outlier coming in the pandemic season of 2020-21 – the team was 14-2 (.875) that campaign. STAC won the East Region Championship in 2017 and has made the regional final in each of the last three.
ALL-TIME vs. LE MOYNE, SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS
- Saint Anselm is 30-19 against Le Moyne in the all-time series. The Dolphins have won six of the last seven games, dating back to Jan. 10, 2017.
- The Hawks battled Le Moyne in the very first NCAA postseason appearance for Saint Anselm, an 88-75 win in the 1960 NCAA Northeast District basketball championship. Saint Anselm made 32 of its 40 free throws against Le Moyne in that first NCAA appearance, led by Robin Munroe and his 17 free throw makes.
- Saint Anselm has won nine of the last 13 games against Le Moyne that have been played in Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Hawks are 15-7 all-time versus the Dolphins in games played on the Hilltop.
- The Hawks are 7-1 in the all-time series with Saint Thomas Aquinas.
- Saint Anselm downed STAC by a 74-49 margin on Mar. 20, 2019, claiming the program's second NCAA Division II East Region Championship. The Hawks led by as many as 30 points in the game and led comfortably once capturing the lead just 4:49 into the contest.
- In the meeting prior, the Spartans eliminated Saint Anselm from the 2017 NCAA Division II East Region Championship with a 91-72 victory in the Quarterfinals game. STAC went on to claim the program's first regional title and fell to Northwest Missouri State, 79-70, in the Elite Eight.
- The Hawks advanced to the regional finals in 2016 by defeating STAC, 77-73, on Mar. 13 behind a game-high 29 points from Mike McCahey '16 and a full stat sheet of 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and a block from Tim Guers '19.
