MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team was defeated on Sunday by Millersville University, 2-1.
Saint Anselm, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association, falls to 0-2 on the season while Millersville, the No. 7 team in the nation, maintains a perfect 3-0 record so far in 2022.
Just under four minutes after Millersville got on the board with a successful penalty stroke by Kate Strickland, sophomore Amanda Lewandowski (Franklin, Mass.) tipped home a ball from senior Avery Tucker (Westbrook, Maine) off a penalty corner to bring the game even at 38:34.
The game-winning goal by Millersville came just 2:56 later off a costly Saint Anselm turnover near midfield. Attempting to recover from the miscue, the Hawks conceded a penalty corner that was converted by Millersville's Ashlynn Lennon off an Emily Buss injection.
Junior Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) started in goal for Saint Anselm, making eight saves on nine shots. Sophomore Sidney Falterer (Fairfield, Conn.) came in off the bench for the Hawks to face the Millersville penalty corner, allowing the strike by Strickland.
Saint Anselm placed just two of its eight shot attempts on goal as Kerstin Koons made one save for Millersville. The Marauders fired 15 shot attempts, including nine on McConnell.
The Hawks will face their third nationally-ranked program of the year on Saturday, Sept. 10, welcoming No. 3 East Stroudsburg to Grappone Stadium for the home opener at 11 a.m.
