Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 6 field hockey blanked by top-ranked Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College field hockey team took on the top-ranked team in the country, Shippensburg University, and came out on the losing end of a 2-0 shutout.

No. 6-ranked Saint Anselm drops to 0-1 on the year while Shippensburg, ranked first in NCAA Division II, has now won 21 consecutive games since the start of last season – the Raiders won their sixth National Championship this past November.

In a battle of All-America netminders, Saint Anselm junior Mackenzie McConnell (Concord Township, Maine) was tested early and often, making a career high 17 saves as the Hawks were outshot by a 32-to-5 margin on the afternoon. No Saint Anselm goalkeeper has made at least 17 saves in a game since Katherine Sears '17 turned away 19 at nationally-ranked LIU Post on Oct. 26, 2013.

After a scoreless first half, Shippensburg scored off a penalty corner just 1:36 into the third quarter. The Hawks responded with a penalty corner of their own just minutes later but the ensuing Saint Anselm shot was sent wide of the cage.

Early pressure once again in the fourth quarter paid off as the Raiders scored just 4:46 into the stanza. Despite a yellow card issued to Shippensburg shortly into the final quarter of regulation, the Raiders fired the first four shots and scored just 11 seconds after yet another penalty corner for the hosts.

Shippensburg backstop Lindsay Tripodo, also an All-America selection last season, made saves on each of the three shots on goal by Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm returns to action against another ranked foe, No. 7 Millersville, at high noon in Millersville, Pa.
