MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team opens its 2022-23 season with a pair of tilts at Mercyhurst University on Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24.
The opening puck drop on Friday's season opener from Erie, Pa. is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Saturday's contest is set for a 2 p.m. start.

The Hawks qualified for their fourth New England Women's Hockey Alliance Championship in four full seasons of competition in 2021-22. However, the team fell to Franklin Pierce University by a 1-0 score on Mar. 5 to finish as the league's runner-up. Saint Anselm posted a 16-13-3 overall record and an 11-6-3 mark against league opponents in its first season playing exclusively against National Collegiate level competition. The Hawks grabbed wins over teams from three conferences last season including Hockey East, ECAC Hockey, and the NEWHA.
The Lakers posted a 21-12-2 record last season which included a 10-6 mark against Collegiate Hockey America opponents. Mercyhurst earned a first round bye in the CHA Championship before downing Penn State University in the semifinals. The Lakers dropped the CHA title game by a 3-2 score in overtime to Syracuse University.
HAWKS NOTES
- The Hawks revealed their captains for the 2022-23 season with graduate student Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) serving the team as co-captains while senior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) will wear an "A" as the team's alternate captain.
- Golini was tied for the Hawks lead last season with 30 points. Her 14 goals were tied for the team lead and her 16 assists were second on the team. She was named to the All-NEWHA Second Team last season after leading Saint Anselm with a plus-20 on-ice rating.
- Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) returns after a stellar first year on the Hilltop. Turner posted 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists while skating to a plus-18 on-ice rating. Turner fired a team-high 133 shots. She was credited with four game-winning goals and three unassisted goals while netting the lone hat trick for the Hawks last season.
- Turner was a Hockey Coaches Association National Rookie of the Year finalist and was named the NEWHA Rookie of the Year.
- Sophomore Madi Ressler (Brighton, Mich.) and junior Brinna Martin (St. Michael, Minn.) recorded 11 points each from the blue line, finishing just ahead of Huson in points amongst the blue line group.
- Huson was the lone Saint Anselm student-athlete to skate in all 32 games last season as she registered eight points on three goals and five assists.
- Kelley made 1,040 saves for the Hawks last season which is a program record and became the first Saint Anselm student-athlete, male or female, to eclipse the 1,000 saves mark in a single season.
- She posted a 0.939 save percentage which was sixth-highest compared to the National Collegiate level and added a 2.28 goals-against average that ranked fourth in the NEWHA. Kelley turned aside 58 shots on Oct. 23 against Harvard, which is also a program record. Kelley was named to the All-NEWHA Second Team.
- Last season, Kelley stopped 50 or more shots in five contests including 51 in the NEWHA Championship game on Mar. 5 and posted 40 or more saves in 15 of 30 games played. Kelley finished the season with a 15-13-2 record with four wins coming in a shutout.
- Saint Anselm returns 21 student-athletes from last season's roster and they brought in six newcomers, five of which are freshmen. Lilly Hartnell (Tampa, Fla.), Sydney Merritt (San Jose, Calif.), Mackenzie Moss (Victoria, Minn.), Brooklyn Pancoast (Helena, Mont.), and Ella Ridge (Chicago, Ill.) make up the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey Class of 2026. The Hawks also brought in junior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who is a transfer from Boston College.
- Head coach Jen Kindret enters her second season at the helm of the program and will look to upon her squad's 16-13-3 record last season.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
- Mercyhurst is receiving votes in both the USCHO.com and the USA Hockey national polls entering the 2022-23 season.
- The Lakers sit at a roster size of 27 entering the 2022-23 season. Mercyhurst has 18 returners from last season's squad, joining seven freshmen and two graduate student transfers.
- Vanessa Upson and Sara Boucher return as the team's top point getters from last season as the duo registered 39 and 38 points each. Upson posted 19 goals and 20 assists which were second and third most on the team. Upson was second on the team with a plus-25 on-ice rating.
- Boucher led the Lakers with 21 goals and added 17 assists for her 38 points and she led the team with 152 shots.
- Sydney Pedersen posted two goals and 15 assists for 17 points to lead the defensive corps for the Lakers.
- Ena Nystrøm returns as Mercyhurst's top goaltender from last season. Nystrøm appeared in 22 games, drawing 19 starts. She was 12-7-0 with two shutouts last season. Nystrøm posted a 1.87 goals-against average and a 0.939 save percentage, which ranked 10th when compared to the National Collegiate level.
- The two transfers for the Lakers are both goaltenders. Jada Brenon who played for four seasons at Holy Cross and Frankie Sanchez, who the Hawks are familiar with, having played at Sacred Heart for four seasons.
- The Lakers outscored their opponents by a 107-73 margin last season. Their scoring margin of 0.97 ranked 12th best at the National Collegiate level.
ALL-TIME vs. MERCYHURST
- The pair of tilts will be the first two meetings between the Hawks and Lakers all-time.
- The last time Saint Anselm won its first all-time meeting with an opponent came in last season's season opener. The Hawks posted a 3-2 result over the University of Maine on Oct.2, 2021.
- Last season, six of the Hawks' non-conference tilts were first meetings.
