Men's soccer on winning end of seven-goal contest

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College men's soccer team came out on the winning end of a seven-goal slugfest on Tuesday, pushing past the College of Saint Rose by a 4-3 margin at Melucci Field.

Saint Anselm (6-1), ranked sixth in the East Region, improves to 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference by downing the region's ninth-ranked outfit in Saint Rose (4-3-1), who falls to 1-2-1 versus the league. The win was the first for the Hawks at home against the Golden Knights since Sept. 24, 2011.

The Hawks have won six of their first seven games for the first time since the program went its first 10 games without a defeat to open up the 2001 campaign. Saint Anselm has already reached last season's overall win total (six) and its NE10 total of victories (three).

Senior Jackson Bukunt (Upton, Mass.) got the ball rolling just 23 seconds into the game, reeling in and scoring off a long ball from classmate Kevin Jordan (Danvers, Mass.) that was misplayed by the Saint Rose back line. Later on in the half, graduate student Zach Elliot (Manchester, N.H.) potted his third goal of the season, carrying the ball up the field and scoring from the top of the 18 yard box.

Ahead by a 2-0 margin at halftime, Saint Rose cut the lead in half with a Josh Elliott goal. It was the Hawks who scored the next two, however, as senior Kyle White (Danvers, Mass.) headed home a corner from classmate Michael Fortin (Goffstown, N.H.) just minutes before senior Taylor Silverstein (Concord, N.H.) scored what would be the game-winning penalty kick in the 59th minute.

The Golden Knights scored each of the final two goals in the game, trimming the once three-goal lead to one. Saint Rose controlled the tempo down the stretch, firing 10 of the final 17 shots in the game, but the Hawks were able to settle the game and secure the team's sixth victory of 2022.

Senior Brian Underhill (Westford, Mass.) made eight saves on 11 shots for the Hawks, earning the victory in net for Saint Anselm. Ryan Henning conceded four goals on 10 shots faced, drawing the loss for the visiting team.

Saint Anselm returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 24, taking on Assumption at high noon at Melucci Field as part of the College's Family Weekend.
