PREVIEW: Volleyball heads south for the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team heads to Owensboro, Ky. for the Kentucky Wesleyan tournament, to be played on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3.

The Hawks will battle Kentucky State and Shorter (Ga.) on Friday before meeting Harding and Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. Live statistics and video will be provided by Kentucky Wesleyan Athletic Communications.

Saint Anselm enters the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational riding a 15-game set winning streak, needing a win in the first set to tie a program record of 16 consecutive set wins set by the 2021 squad. The Hawks have grabbed a win in their first five matches for the second consecutive season. Saint Anselm will head to Springfield, Mass. for the IVHOF DII East Region Clash on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 following the tournament at Kentuckey Wesleyan.

Kentucky State grabbed a win in their season-opening match over West Alabama on Aug. 26 but has dropped each of their last four matches. After meeting the Hawks at 11 a.m. on Friday, the team is right back in action against Nebraska-Kearney at 1 p.m.

Shorter dropped its opening match to the 2022 season by a 3-1 score to Francis Marion before sweeping both Erskine and Clark Atlanta. The team opens the tournament against Nebraska-Kearney at 9 a.m. on Friday and then will battle the Hawks at 3 p.m.

Harding is 3-1 to open its season. The Bison grabbed wins over Edward Waters, Dallas Baptist, and St. Edward's but fell to Barry in straight sets. Harding will meet Lincoln Memorial and Tiffin on Friday before battling the Hawks at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Nebraska-Kearney, who made an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament last season, is off to a 5-0 start to 2022. The Antelopes and Hawks will both close their Kentucky Wesleyan Tournament at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Antelopes are ranked No. 9 in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches' Association poll.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Freshman Ava Kidd (Walton, Ky.) and sophomore Gabby Belcher (Buckeye, Ariz.) are tied for the team lead with 33 kills each while senior Lauren Casey (Jefferson City, Mo.) follows closely with 31.
  • Kidd was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week following her blistering debut, which featured 10 kills on 12 swings good for an .833 hitting percentage against Valdosta State on Aug. 25.
  • Senior Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) ranks second in the NE10 with an average of 10.20 assists per set, good for 102 on the season. Henwood has 2,154 career assists which is fifth all-time. The senior can surpass Heather Swerchesky '99 who has 2,208 career assists.
  • Senior Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Calif.) has 992 career digs, which is 10th most in program history. She needs just four digs to pass Samantha Regan '08. Belmontez leads the Hawks with 62 digs this season.
  • Juniors Kaitlin Brown (Glendale, Ariz.) and Audrey Wetjen (Henderson, Nev.) lead the Saint Anselm blockers with 12.0 and 10.0 blocks each respectively.
SCOUTING KENTUCKY STATE
  • Sashka Davis leads the Thoroughbreds offense with 35 kills while Amaya Johnson follows closely with 30 kills.
  • Audi Hicks and Mariah Green have split setting duties with Hicks recording 50 helpers, the most on the squad, and Green ranking second with 36.
  • Johnson leads the Thoroughbreds defensive efforts with 49 digs. Justice Mudd and Davis are second and third on the team with 22 and 21 digs each.
  • Kendall Washington has had a hand in two solo blocks and six assisted blocks for 8.0 total blocks.
SCOUTING SHORTER (GA.)
  • Lacee Glover is averaging 2.50 kills per set with 25 kills through 10 sets played. Glover is responsible for a team-high 28.5 points for the Hawks.
  • Annie Smith and Taryn Cycholl are the top two setters for Shorter, combining for 87 assists this season. Smith leads the squad with 50 helpers through three matches, averaging 5.00 per set.
  • Madison Sprosty is averaging 3.90 digs per set and has a total of 39 digs through 10 sets this season.
  • Carrington Terrell leads the Hawks with 11.0 blocks, coming from two solo blocks and nine assisted blocks.
SCOUTING HARDING
  • Three Bison have over 30 kills this season with Kelli McKinnon leading the team at 45. Logan Smith ranks second (39) and Skyler McKinnon is third (30).
  • Sarah Morehead has registered 146 helpers this season, good for an average of 10.43 per set.
  • Emma Winiger and Grecia Soriano led the Bison defense with 47 and 41 digs each. The squad has registered 231 digs through four matches this season.
  • Libby Hinton and Kelli McKinnon are the top two blockers for Harding. Hinton leads the squad with 15.0 blocks while McKinnon is second with 12.0 blocks.
SCOUTING NEBRASKA-KEARNEY
  • Emerson Cyza is 34th on the national scale in total kills (59). Her average of 3.93 kills per set is 31st in all of NCAA Division II.
  • Peyton Neff has 173 assists on the year which ranks second in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
  • Jensen Rowse is averaging 3.24 digs per set and has totaled 55 digs in 2022. Lauren Taubenheim follows closely with 49 digs, good for an average of 3.06 per set.
  • Fallon Stutheit has a team-high 16.0 blocks, three solo and 13 assisted.
